My letter to editor and TIME and NEwsweek
Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 05:36 PM by greenbriar
An open letter to all Senators and Representatives:

You say you want to hear from the people, listen closely. I am a daughter. My father died at the age of 65 because of an untreatable form of cancer. My mother lives by herself on a very tight budget. I am a Wife. Recently, my husband had an extensive stay at the Mayo Clinic leaving us with a bill that is almost half my yearly teaching salary. This amount is after insurance paid its small part because we had to go out of network. I am a Mother. My daughter worries about how to pay for college as she struggles to maintain her good grades in over-crowded classrooms. I am a friend. Just this weekend I attended the funeral of a beloved friend, a sheriff who was killed by meth abusers. I am a teacher. I buy supplies for my students because many can not afford what is necessary to complete standards based assignments. Sometimes I buy for classes that number 35-40. Most days I feel I do nothing more than deal with behavioral problems. I am a Christian. My bible tells me to not cast stones, not to judge and to love everyone.

You say you want to represent the people, but you don't listen. There are real problems in the world. There are real issues to be concerned with, for instance, health care, drug problems in our youth, over crowded schools, poverty, social security protection and the list goes on and on. Before you worry about the NON issue of Ann and Eve and Adam and Steve, worry about the issues that really affect your constituency. I could care less about gay union. It does NOT affect the sanctity of my marriage, but the real issues do. I am a TAX PAYER but even more importantly, I am a VOTER and I am not alone.

1. That was a great letter
and very heart-felt. Will anyone ever listen? Who knows.

On a side issue, I have subscribed to Time for over 10 years, but I will not be renewing. It is a propaganda service for the White House, especially when it came to Iraq. I could cite many examples...

5. Its a good letter, you should also send it in to your local papers
local papers are apt to print LTTEs. (remember DU has the media blaster to help with the links)

7. The DU media blaster is here
http://www.democraticunderground.com/cu/cu.php?az=blaster

I cannot get it to open my email system, but it is very useful in getting links to many of the newspapers in your area. What I do is put in my state and city, the blaster gives me a list of email addresses, I put one of the addresses in the TO: field of my email system and put the rest in the bbc: field. That way every paper thinks it is getting an original.

9. My letter to editor and Time and Newsweek
This letter is great but needs one change. Please do not say "could care less about gay unions" - it's COULDN'T care less. Think about it!
Otherwise your letter is fantastic!

11. letter to editor and Time and Newsweek
Hi, thanks for the welcome!

I promise not to be a grammar nanny. This particular phrase is a pet peeve of mine because one means the exact opposite of the other (could/couldn't). No offense intended so I hope none taken.

12. We all could use a bit more grammar
and many here welcome an additional assist.

Hope you do not mind receiving a suggestion. When posting inside a thread you do not need to put the thread title in the subject line. When posting inside a thread, the subject line is where one begins writing their own post. It is the only part of your post one sees in the outline format.

Again welcome to DU.
