Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 07:37 PM by diamond14

it's amazing...this true story has been floating around on the web for 4 years, because it is HORRIFYING...and TODAY, the entire "brownshirt" photo is in the WP, with identification of all the reTHUGlicans that intimated vote-counters in Maimi, and LIED to the press about who they were.....

here's today's WP story....look at the PHOTO at this link....

Miami 'Riot' Squad: Where Are They Now?

By Al Kamen
Monday, January 24, 2005; Page A13

As we begin the second Bush administration, let's take a moment to reflect upon one of the most historic episodes of the 2000 battle for the White House -- the now-legendary "Brooks Brothers Riot" at the Miami-Dade County polling headquarters.

This was when dozens of "local protesters," actually mostly Republican House aides from Washington, chanted "Stop the fraud!" and "Let us in!" when the local election board tried to move the re-counting from an open conference room to a smaller space

With help from their GOP colleagues and others, we identified some of these Republican heroes of yore in a photo of the event.

Some of those pictured have gone on to other things, including stints at the White House. For example, Matt Schlapp, No. 6, a former House aide and then a Bush campaign aide, has risen to be White House political director. Garry Malphrus, No. 2 in the photo, a former staff director of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on criminal justice, is now deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. And Rory Cooper, No. 3, who was at the National Republican Congressional Committee, later worked at the White House Homeland Security Council and was seen last week working for the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

Sources say the "rioters" proudly note their participation on résumés and in interviews. But while the original hardy band of demonstrators numbered barely a couple of dozen, the numbers apparently have grown with the legend.

THE ENTIRE PHOTO IS IN THE WP TODAY !!!!

2. Why did it take over 4 years for a journalist to identify these people?

8. If I were them...I'd be afraid for my own security.
Now that there are names, faces, and places in one neat listing...they should probably look for someway to protect themselves.

It only takes one pissed off nut thats been screwed by this administration...and we know there are millions.

14. Well I have to admit...I've never seen it.
I know about the incident...but I did not know they had been identified. And I don't think a lot of other people know either.

So...maybe we should email the shit out of it. ;)

I'm not a nutball...but perhaps it will end up in one's inbox.

Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 08:17 PM by higher class
of these people have been known for years. They have been posted to DU many times and have been referenced in countless threads - I've referenced the 'DeLay door-pounders' in about three dozen of my own messages.

16. AND, the story-line fails to indicate how important this brown-shirt
event was....

there's nothing mentioned about how this 'riot' scared the living daylights out of the poll workers inside the building, causing them to flee the building and run for their lives....

ALL THE PAPERS used this as an 'example' of LOCAL PEOPLE not wanting the vote to be counted......nobody, except here on DU and other internet media, identified these brown-shirts.....

These criminals AND their enablers (u.s. congressional reps) MUST be arrested and tried for CRIMES against OUR Democracy....

17. The rioters did not scare the Miami-Dade Canvassing Board Members
Armando Gutierrez, the ringleader of the Cuban component, was on the payroll of the Chairman of the Canvassing Board at the time. At least one of the other 2 members also knew Gutierrez.

Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 08:48 PM by diamond14

someone eliminate the FEAR of a bunch of THUGS pounding on a glass door and screaming at you.....do you think anyone cared who was on whose payroll at the time of this RIOT??

I have counted votes, and had this 'RIOT' group appeared at my glass door, I'd be GONE...which was EXACTLY what happened.....nobody wants to be BEAT or possible KILLED just because they are trying to do their CIVIC duty of counting votes...

one thin piece of glass between YOU and a BIG bunch of BIG guys RIOTING at the door....you'd be foolish to stay.....

AND THE BIG QUESTION: Why did the police stand down, and fail to arrest these criminals??....there were many calls to the police, but somehow, none did their duty....

21. They were not just acquaintances
One of the lead rioters was on the Chair's business payroll.

I am sure many of the poll workers didn't know what was going on, but the people in charge knew exactly what was happening and played along. There were people on the inside who were accomplices.

18. So they passed themselves off as residents of Miami Beach, Key
Biscayne, Miami Lakes, Kendall or South Miami and they pump themselves up on their resumes? This confirms that they were coached by DeWine and DeLay in memory of Atwater.

How can anyone have respect for them?

Pigs slopping.

Published that photo in 2001. Sure takes a lot of hubris to promote these people after they've already been identified.

Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 09:25 PM by Tactical Progressive
Didn't read the article, but the excerpts are making the point that their actions are honored and envied on a career level. Unless the article is remarking on how misguided that is, it doesn't sound like much of a condemnation.
