Rumsfeld orders soldiers' puppy killed
Edited on Tue Jan-18-05 04:15 PM by orthogonal
PFC Connor, a Marine mascot previously mentioned in this post, was hunted down and killed just 24 hours before his planned departure from Iraq.

8. I wonder if the order had to do with the packs of feral dogs
that have been running around eating corpses?

I agree that animals that had been adopted by soldiers should have been exempt, but that WOULD be a justification for a "kill all dogs" order.

14. Military kills dogs
When my dad was returning home from WWII (on the Queen Mary or Queen Elizabeth converted to troop carriers) a few guys smuggled their military messenger dogs onto the ship to take home. When the Army commanders got wind of it, they had all the dogs (15) thrown over the side into the mid-Atlantic ocean. My father said it was one of the saddest scenes he ever witnessed watching all those dogs paddling around the ocean trying to follow the ship leaving them in the wake.

There are truly some insensitive pieces of crap sharing the planet with us.

How incredibly inhumane. I would have been so filled with hate for the ones who issued that command, I don't know if I could have even been civil to them afterwards. I love dogs so much, I think I could easily kill people who harm dogs.

on a similar theme concerning the dogs that accompanied the grunts on patrols, to sense dangers, such as ambushes, trip-wires, etc. Some, of course, were killed, some very badly injured; all had a price on their head, placed by the Viet Cong leaders, as they were so effective.

Many, if not all, had been pets belonging to American families and doubtless individuals too, but offered to the military at their request. Obviously, they needed to have certain characteristics. A Pekinese wasn't going to be much cop.

Naturally, the soldiers loved them like their best buddies, just as the dogs did them. Unbelievably, some psycho in the administration decreed that that they had to be left behind. Soldiers interviewed in America years later, were close to tears telling their story. It left me fuming and raging that such low-lifes could such power. But of course, it's more like the rule than the exception.

Killing the dogs they had personally trained, was one of the tests Gestapo recruits to the Gestapo had to pass to prove their ruthlessness had to pass, I believe. Possibly, a test order by the idiot (Schickelgruber), himself.

...I had never read this post.

This has opened a pit inside of me that I doubt can ever be filled, closed or healed. Just when I think my hatred of my species can't sink any lower, something like this comes along and proves me wrong.

Why didn't your father do something? Why did they stand there and let it happen? Have they no fucking conscience or souls? There were more enlisted men on that ship than officers. All it would have taken was a backbone. After all, those dogs would have gladly given their lives for the people on board. Too bad none of the humans proved themselves worthy of such loyalty.

No disaster that endangers mankind can come too soon for my tastes.

26. I don't
I need a little more than somebody's weblog to believe that this is an official policy ordered by Rumsfeld himself.

Actually, I don't know that Rummy ordered it himself; I was using "Rumsfeld" as a synecdoche for the Defense Department as a whole.

As far the story coming first-hand from a solder's blog, rather from an "approved" mainstream media report, well, to paraphrase Secretary Rumsfeld, :

'You tell the story with the sources you have, not the sources you want.'

I don't mean to be overly critical, but you should know the sort of knee-jerk reactions such a post could evoke. This just makes us look like bigger fools when our source for linking the DOD to a mass dog euthanasia policy is one couple's weblog. Mainstream media or not, one source does not a policy make.

41. I never implied that he had "redeeming features."
All I am implying is that the subject of the OP is misleading; that the original blog entry doesn't once mention that Rumsfeld masterminded this cruel act. There is nothing in the journal entry linking to any source (be it mainstream or otherwise) that even mentions such a mandate. It's false information such as this that leads such "acceptable" sources as the NY Times to broadstroke DU as a bunch of kooks with false information.

48. I take your point,
BTB, and I think it better had the connection not been made, but this is one thread I think they would not want to make an issue of. Rumsfeldt's not expressed any compunction about Abu Graib, just that it came to light and much has been made of it.

Now, if Duers came up with such stuff as a prosaic and down-to-earth, neocon presidential candidate claiming he'd invented the Internet, I could understand your trepidation a little better. They are simply in no position to call Democrats cooky, whatever the excesses of occasional, individual Democratic posters?

55. Whether Rummy ordered it DOES NOT MATTER
All I am implying is that the subject of the OP is misleading; that the original blog entry doesn't once mention that Rumsfeld masterminded this cruel act.

And Rumsfeld didn't stop it either. The issues been around for at least a month.

Rummy claims he supports our troops (and the Bush Administration and its surrogates love to say that Democrats and leftists don't).

But Rummy, despite all his "support", can't figure out that the troops need better armor until a Sargeant asks him about it directly; and Rummy, who you'd think would care about keeping up the morale of the troops he's sent to Iraq, either doesn't hear or doesn't care when our fighting men and women plead to keep their mascots.

It doesn't matter whether Rummy ordered mascot killing or not: Rummy's the man in charge, the guy with the big office and the fancy title, and it's ultimately his responsibility. It happened on Rummy's watch.

All I'm asking for is an accountability moment.

45. Base Commanders...
Brigade Commander and such have quite a bit of power as to how they run their ship. They can institute a lot of policies by decree and on their own initiative. Not every policy has to be handed down from Rummy Boy. I have a friend I served with in Iraq and his unit has a couple of dogs that they adopted from the soldiers that had to leave them behind. The only policy their commander instituted was that they could not get anymore dogs except the two they already have.

57. And sad to say, this story has more potential for converting
Republicans than any story about dead Iraqi children.

It reminds me of a Doonesbury cartoon that appeared during the Vietnam War.

B.D. was supporting the war, and Boopsie was reading a newspaper account of a bombing raid on Hanoi which hit a residential area and a hatchery, killing some number of people and 5,000 baby ducks.

Boopsie wails, "Baby ducks!?"
