Why the Peace Churches are Meeting in March
http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=15&ItemID=6985

<snip>"By consistently underestimating the number of troops necessary for the successful occupation of Iraq, the administration has placed a tremendous burden on the Army Reserve and created this crisis," said the very same West Point, Airborne, and Harvard man who thinks Iraq looks a lot like Korea to him.

So it looks to me, kids, like it’s time to get real about the draft. Either you can get your conscientious objector papers together and sign up with the peace churches, or you can prepare for employment in the newly restructured Army Reserves, which is going to be rotating folks into Korea, I mean Iraq, for the rest of your lives. They say it’s a free country you live in, boys, so they might even give you another whole month to decide.

1. I for one support a draft
I hope to God we have a draft. It will be the best thing that ever happened to this country. Time to bring the war home.

2. I do not support the draft
I don't support forcing people to go to the other side of the world to be forced to kill or be killed for oil. Nope. I will never support that.

If they are going to support the war, let them fight it.

5. And what of the ones who don't support the war and are caught up in it?
What about them? The innocents.

6. no, they are not innocent
To paraphrase George Carlin poorly, the fact that you are living and breathing on this planet is prima facie evidence of guilt. :)

Still paying your taxes? You are complicit in the war. No riots? We are all complicit. Bring on the draft - the war will end in one month.

7. No. There really are some true innocent 19 year olds out there
No street smarts, no understanding of the way our government will lie through its teeth. Really, some of these kids are babies. Some are even too shy to kiss a girl. There are exceptions, for sure. I know some 19 year olds who would rather pet a puppies head than chase girls. The wide brush won't work when you are talking about sending some teenager off to kill who just does what he is told to do because thats the way he was brought up. They just don't know no better. And the propaganda we are all being subjected to is overwhelming. These kids do not understand propaganda. And no one has explained it to them either. Got to cut some slack here I think.

9. I Do, Only Because...

frankly, the draft will be the ONLY way to FORCE folks to get involved! If Ma and Paw Kettle have *their* son or daughter at risk, they MIGHT just think TWICE!

I opposed the draft before as a form of nonconsensual slavery and I oppose it now for the same reasonds... BUT... in terms of long-range damage to the republicans, the draft is the next best weapon!

Part of today's problem is the republicans (and wealthy Dems) have the meme of "Hey, let's you and him fight!!" and they can draw back intpo their safe shell "WHAT, volunteer for the ARMY, Junior?!! Over MY DEAD BODY!!" whereas if their kid calls them up in tears "M-mom? I just got a letter saying 'Greetings'... what do we DO?!!" it's a whole different kettle of Ohshit!

If Joe and Jane Sixpack find their kid's tit in the Federal wringer, they'll start to scream bloody murder! It is the *only* way to WAKE THEM UP!

10. No, the problem is that wealthy kids still will not serve with a draft
Even with a draft, the wealthy and connected will find exemptions for their kids. I seen it happen once before.

8. The Fish Song--Woodstock Version.
Gimme an F!

F!
Gimme an U!

U!
Gimme an C!

C!
Gimme an K!

K!
What's that spell ?

FUCK!
What's that spell ?

FUCK!
What's that spell ?

FUCK!
Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Gotta go out and get those reds —
The only good commie is the one who's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Huh!

Well, come on Wall Street, don't move slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go.
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, don't hesitate,
Send 'em off before it's too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Where are Country Joe and the Fish when you need 'em?
