Yesterday's Result: Bipartisan Paper-Trail Legislation Introduced
In their story about the Ohio challenge, the WaPo writes:

Several lawmakers said they will soon introduce bills to shore up the nation's voting processes. Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said he and Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) will reintroduce legislation requiring that voters be able to verify their ballots' accuracy by seeing paper versions before they are cast, and requiring backup paper records to be kept on file.

Can we now stop whining about what happened yesterday, and get on with trying to fix the problems? Please?

1. That is a hell of a great result.
Let's see them try to kill that one. We can whipsaw them for years if they do.

2. If Tom Delay
won't allow it to come up for vote we have to find some way to put tremendous pressure thru the media spotlight to embarrass and shame them.We have had two stolen elections. We can't just keep hoping they will do it right. They know they have a system in place that will keep putting them in office.Maybe this could be DU's next project to make sure this is passed.

4. If by whining you mean expressing honest outrage
I'm pretty sure some more is coming along. But this is a good step.

5. Yes, I was one of the whiners yesterday - I just couldn't
stand the "we know */co won" stuff when we were talking about voter fraud. Yes, we must push forward and put some backbone into yesterday's efforts. This legislation is great and I will commit to supporting it.

I am though moving farther and farther left and would now vote outside the party if I like the candidate even if the vote wouldn't elect the Dem. That is a big change for me.

6. We'll see
When it becoems law, and it's actually real, then I'll be exicted. But it'll probably be attatched to another bill which will be easier to vote down.

It's nice to hear. But since when does that count for anything?

7. Let's see the legislation before we get excited
Because if they are following the NV model, the paper is useless. Remember the $1.4 mil price tag to hire "technicians" to count the NV paper????????

This is just to shut us the hell up and make recounts a) harder, b) more expensive and c) prohibitive.

Yeah, NV is a good model for us to follow. NOT.

8. Remember the problem is AUDITING not just having paper.
The law has to mandate that audits be done, not just recounts if the race is close. When you have machines counting the vote, every election has to be AUDITED. Having a paper ballot is a nice first step but it's not enough. We already had paper with the optical scanners; we just didn't mandate auditing the vote. The scanners are just as culpable as the touchscreens in this mess we've got ourselves into. If we want to restore democracy, we need to AUDIT EVERY MACHINE-COUNTED ELECTION.
