White House Memo, convince public Social Security doomed
White House memo: Pitch Social Security doom
Rove aide strategy: Convince public system’s ‘heading for iceberg’
The Associated Press Updated: 8:37 p.m. ET Jan. 5, 2005
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6791950/

WASHINGTON - The success of President Bush’s push to remake Social Security depends on convincing the public that the system is “heading for an iceberg,” according to a White House strategy note that makes the case for cutting benefits promised for the future.

Calling the effort “one of the most important conservative undertakings of modern times,” Peter Wehner, the deputy to White House political director Karl Rove, says in the e-mail message that a battle over Social Security is winnable for the first time in six decades and could transform the political landscape.

The White House confirmed the authenticity of the e-mail but did not have an immediate comment.

3. I'm suprised that MSGOP is selling this as the....
White House "Spin". Usually they would sell this crap as being the "Truth" from God.

4. This seems like a similar strategy
as the buildup to the war in Iraq. Convince the public that there were WMD that could be used against us and that Sadaam was involved with 9-11. All not true but what consequences were there? They got away with the scare tactics for that so they are trying it for this.

11. Iraq comparisons
This has been noted quite a few times by different people. The main difference I see here is that they can't seem to go ten minutes without quite publically exposing some part of their true SS agenda, and the media spin on this is already starting to turn against them.

8. I wonder how far this will get
America doesn't seem to care, the worse the evidence is the more they seem to love what is being done to them.

9. Why a memo?? It's common knowledge that you can sell this
ignorant nation anything. I'm sorry I devoted my life to fighting for various causes for the every day, common American. Today's bums aren't worth lifting a finger for because they believe that dumb as dirt is cool. They are bringing the suffering upon themselves.

12. I hate to say I share your sentiments right now
but I do. I think what in the hell I wasted fighting for all those causes now that will be dismantled, and the people will cry for more.

13. This is the danger of having Republicans control the government
They control the "debate." This is not really a debate the American people want to be having, and the only reason we're having it is that Republicans want to murder Social Security. They want their fat cat donors to be let off the hook, because after all, it's really employers who pay for SS.

17. They want to dismantle SS
I would bet money on it!

(Oh, I actually am each time they take money out of my check for it now)

CBO projects solvency until 2052, then SS would only have 80% solvency but that is apparently based on lowball projections of growth.

Good thread!

18. This has to be the line in the sand
If the Democratic Party can't mobilize public opinion to save Social Security from the corporate rapists, then we should change the name to the Sheeple Party.

This isn't some difference in policy approaches. This is all-out war.

19. Bush -- like hitler -- kills us to save us.. remember that. He is making
up LIES about the 'perils of SS' in order to pretend he's the hero and make these changes which will only benefit his crooked banker pals.
