Help!!! Anyone know where I might find registered party counts for 2004?

I'm interested in comparing the actual votes counted in 2004 to the regesterd (Dem/Repug)party numbers. Iv'e been searching online and have found the vote numbers but not registered party numbers broken down by states or districts?

1. at the county level

All county election offices maintained lists of registered voters. They are available to the public. My county (Palm Beach county, Florida) posts aggregate numbers of their websites. I imagine many other counties do so as well. This would require methodically going through county by county. I don't know if any national organization has compiled aggregate numbers for the entire nation. If anyone would have them, my guess is it would be the Republicans.

Wouldn't this be a key tool used by political analysts?

but most people are rather protective of data, even if the data is publicly available. I don't know where they would be publicly posted in aggregate form.

You could go state by state and collect it that way. You can get voter registration numbers for Florida here:

4. they got them from the supervisor of elections office

The Kerry campaign got them from the county supervisor of elections office. They trashed their info on Nov. 3. I managed to get a volunteer list from them for future organizing, but I never asked about voter registration lists. I can tell you, based on the canvassing I did, the lists are out of date anyway.

5. Good to see Florida has this info. Check these numbers?

3,892,492 Registered Repulicans
3,955,656 actual votes for BUSH
+63,164 more votes then those registered.

4,261,249 Registered Democrates
3,574,509 actual votes for Kerry
-686,740 - 61,618(total all other party votes) = 625,122 missing or non votes?

I'll bet that every red state has these same numbers that don't add up.. I would'nt question it so much if it were any other presidential election but this was an extraordinary one. Everyone knew how important the election was and everyone came out of the woodwork to vote. especially democrates

6. oh, you want turnout numbers, not registration numbers

the Florida supervisor of elections website does not seem to have turnout by party posted for 2004, although it is likely to be available from them directly.

Overall, turnout in Florida was 74.2%.

Also, keep in mind that there are almost 1.9 million Floridians registered with no party affiliation and plenty of people in Florida who are registered as Democrats, but really aren't (either they registered before 1980 and never changed or are registered as Democrats so they can screw with our primaries).

I'm not trying to take away from what you are doing. But, in Florida at least, there are several counties with a large % of Democratic registration that have voted republican for many years.

both the turnout number and the non party members. As far as Dem's voting repug, I am aware the bullshit the repukes pull by changing affiliation to vote in the weakest Dem candidate during a re-election year primary, then vote Repuke at the hog race.

7. Remember too there are states with no party registration

Like MN and MI. Makes Get Out the Vote efforts very challenging!
