Poll question: Is America still a 'FREE' country?
Is America still a 'FREE' country?

Talking about personal civil liberties, not the GOP notion of 'freedom' which is nothing more than unfettered corporate power...

1. It depends on what your definition of free is...
If you are born rich and white you are free to make as much money as you want.

15. Freedom, in this country, should be defined as our founding fathers...
spelled out for us. When the ideals they eloquently delineated are forgotten or ignored we are in trouble as free land. The Constitution is sacred in my eyes. Not many Americans have even bothered to read it. Is it any wonder we have slipped so far?

6. So much for "Free Market" in the "free society"
Let me see subsidies for steel, corp farms, milk, grain etc. We are have to have insurance on our cars. By law we can't negotiate prices for prescription drugs. Ummm, those are just off the top of my head I am sure there are others.

5. "Free"? Free indeed!
That is, of course, only if you're a fundie, a neocon in the bush admin, Rupert von Murdoch, or someone who owns stock in Lee Greenwood's record company.

7. We're still free...
...to say what we want. Sometimes. This offer subject to change.

We're free to protest as long as we don't mind protesting in a designated area far away from the object of our protest and as long as we don't mind getting arrested.

We're free to vote, especially if we're white and vote in a wealthy precinct. We may not be free to have our votes counted.

We're free to love others as we see fit, as long as we don't get caught.

We're free to buy corporate medicine, but not to use the free stuff that grows in the ground.

We're free to watch reality shows.

8. All human beings are born free....
...and equal in dignity and rights.... After everyone figures things out for oneself and it's better to be white, rich and all right than to be black, poor and sick.

13. Not free enough
We are slowly getting there, but we have a long way to go. Patients can still be arrested for taking their medicine. We still have a "war on drugs". If two consenting adults have sexual relations and money changes hands, both of them can be arrested. Up until last year, it was illegal in some states for consenting adults to have certain types of sex.

16. No Way
Patriot Act I took care of most civil liberties and Patriot Act II will finish off the rest.

17. Has anyone here actually had their civil liberties violated in a real
understandable and concrete way, and not some theoretical way?

I'd like some examples because I can't say that I have, yet I oppose the Patriot acts and to be honest, sometimes I think I just oppose them because * supports them!

18. I get the full treatment every time I fly. It's very irritating.
I'm "on the list" apparently...the list "they" claim they don't have, but Ted Kennedy found out otherwise....

19. Never has been
Freedom is the ideal that Jefferson, Madison, and all were shooting for, but we've never really come close enough. We still can't get over the hangover of slavery and these days we are regressing big time. Sad.

20. maybe the real Christ hasn't come yet to save us...
perhaps God just needs to have sex with multiple virgins....and Jesus' half-brother will be born tomorrow night?!

Remember there are Christs and false Christs...and both are convincing.;)
