Populist argument regarding entertainment media and family friendly values
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 11:42 AM by mandyky
Would it work if Democrats came out for Family Friendly TV shows before 9PM? This would move many of these reality shows, like marry a millionaire, deparate housewives, etc. to later time slots. We should also encourage Hollywood to make family friendly shows like -
Touched By an Angel, Promised Land, Early Edition, etc.

I wish TV would ease up on these reality shows and make shows that are educational and inspirational, as well as entertaining. I loved the NBC show MR Sterling, and it was quite revealing about the US Senate, First Monday was good (CBS I think) about the supreme Court, and The Agency (CBS) about the CIA.

1. Democrats should decry the filth and human degradation of media
If an anthropologist from the 22nd century dug up our current television schedule, he/she would conclude the following about our culture:

--an obsession with necrophilia (X Files, CSI, Medical Investigator)
--an obsession with violent crime (you pick)
--an obsession with public humiliation (reality shows)

That's the short list. What more ammunition do we need.

This is not just a tactical move, attacking big media, it's a vital political issue.

American television is mind pollution, damaging lives, degrading humanity.

2. We now have 3 each of
Law and Order and CSI. There are 3 other shows about Medical Investigators BESIDES CSI. The only original dramas are Judging Amy, Joan of Arcadia and West Wing.

Where are the folks who came up with Quantum Leap and other imaginative shows? I wish Donald Bellasario would do something other than JAG and NCIS.

4. My saying: "I don't turn on TV for fear of being arrested." Good points.

3. as a parent i would like to see this
and i think it is why many older parents are voting for republican. they think it is their issue. yet on this board time and again i try to express as a parent and my desire to raise children in an healthy enviroment, how hard it is with what we give to our children today. and the people on this board inevtiably resort to saying i am repressed, puritan, i want to deny adults their porn, i shouldnt protect my children from porn, tis good for them to experience others voyerist sexuality......yada yada yada

i dont think it is too much for a parent to ask for television that they dont have to throw body in front of

a bit further, many of the things put on tv now that isnt appropriate are commercial, and these are republican run corporations. it would be an attack on republican and their so called family values that they are hypocrits of. and i think it would benefit the democratic party

and not deny adult their porn. they can find it anywhere

5. a step further, the children dont want this sh*t fed to them
i am around children all around, i watch them grow, i listen to them. they dont like this stuff, they dont want this stuff as it is thrown at them continually. they are the ones asking to not have this stuff. i listen

yet the people that tell me it is all ok, they are the ones not listening to the children. they dismiss reject the children for their own self absortion and self satisfaction and self expression

6. Speaking of commercial - Commercials
These viagra ads and other such things don't need to be shown on Cartoon Network and other Kids TV channels either!

8. I've not seen any of the shows referenced above...

but when I, a childfree person, hear family friendly I hear a call for bland goofy Disney movies from the 1970s a la World's Greatest Athlete. IMHO, Family Friendly brings to my mind the notion of Brady Bunch where the worse thing to happen was Marcia got hit in the nose by an errant football.

11. Have you seen Quantum Leap?
That was family friendly and always had a moral to boot.
Rescue 911 - I used to watch that with my older kids every week.

This is family friendly - things that parents and children can watch together, and (**gasp**) may even teach kids someting or get a conversation going with parents and their kids.

14. i love quantum leap.
my kids would love too. i dont think we get it. but have been watching a lot of tv land. funny remembering, ya,....that was good

so how many of you, from kid all the way up in age, liked to sit next to your parents while a couple or group was naked and getting it on

any of you feel a bit yuk.

i can respect that

or is it about desensitizing our kids from their natural being so we can mold them to what

9. What ever happened to the V-Chip?
I seem to remember being told that the V-Chip was a great invention because it would help parents more closely monitor the children's television viewing. At the time, I thought it was a great idea because parents would have more control over their children's viewing habits while the rest of us could watch what we want.

10. Supposedly it is still around
But what I am talking about is a populist effort to ask Hollywood to make family friendly TV shows.

I was watching cartoons with my son the other day -

Codename kids Next door - pits teenagers against little kids
Ed, Edd, and Eddy - calling people idiots, acting like hoodlums

There should be shows like Rocky and Bullwinkle, Tom and Jerry, etc.

Where did the cartoon heroes like Johnny Quest, Superman, etc. go?
The media is teaching our kids to be idiots with this crap. Parents need to get on these stations and I think if the Dems joined in, it just might show these "red states" that we DO have values and morals, that we do love children, etc.

cartoon network, cannot believe some of the things. told boys years ago, if they have a mad face ALL the time, or honor stupid, we dont watch. turn it off. never liked ed ed and eddy. or spongebob. my kids are real good at not only following the rules, but understand why media is doing this and how they themselves dont want to give hollywood or society as a whole the opportunity for this brainwashing

we can take it politically. my 9 year old read book bushism. and saying, man he sounds uneducated. told him, and he had the money and opportunity to be educated in the best schools. yet he encourages people to embrace stupid. a nation of stupid, and people can do whatever they want. no one thinking for themselves.

edwards wanted to go after some of the commercials. not seeing family value repugs doing that. but then edwards has little little kids. these are the ones it effects. this is the age parent is so challenged with this oh so sophisticated society

12. Al Gore and Senator Paul Simon championed that
I like to remind family values Republicans that it was Democrats who made that happen because the Republicans were in the pockets of the entertainment industry and TV manufacturers that didn't want them.

13. not even about the v chip any more
the program itself, i can do. i know what is coming on. i dont watch fear factor. my children dont need to watch a bunch of people with all their might eat bugs. i had to teach kids at 2 and 3 no we dont eat bugs. basic parenting. i dont have the show on

it is the disney shows were they take a 16, 17 year old and make her twelve. a very sexual and sensual 12. and tell her (all twelve year olds you are suppose to do that).

it is the commercial that is on and boom. nothing can be done.

my 9 year old told me the other day, cant turn on history channel cause they use a bad world in a commercial. (playboy. this is where my then 7 year old learned about sex from his 7 and 9 year old nephews.) they were talking benjamen franklin. husband i i both ya right, remember the commercial. well hey, they call men playboys and women sluts. what can i say. same thing./ since they are teaching benjamens sexual exploits to the children now, as part of history

my boys like macquiver. just got hooked on it before school as they get ready. the thing they are impressed with the most, he uses his brain. and doesnt have to resort to senseless killing. yet he wins in honesty and goodness. triumphs evil withut becoming evil

yes a good show. and hte kids recognize as son says, any murder in htis story, when he walks into room. ya one i say. every show has to have murder he says.

listen to the kids. this is all i am asking

15. I agree with you about Fear Factor
And then Big Brother - some people use the F word so much there are more beeps than words - but kids know what they are saying and it tells them trash talk like this is ok. It is on at 8 PM.

Even though Walker Texas Ranger had more violence than is really good, he was a role model and hero.

Heck I'd settle for an equivalent of the Sonny and Cher show. Especially from 8 to 9 PM, when some kids under 10 are still awake it would seem at least the 3 major networks could find something family friendly to put on.
