SUV Owners File Class-Action Suit against Makers of Patriotic Magnets

The Nashville-based law firm of Bowes and Alexander announced today that it has filed a class-action law-suit against the makers of a popular magnetic ribbon that allows American drivers to show their support for the troops. The suit alleges that the "Support Our Troops" magnets cause "extensive harm" to the bodies of high-end SUVs.

Drivers say that 'support the troops' ribbons cause extensive damage to vehicle exteriors.

A Good Idea Gone Horribly Wrong

In northwest North Carolina, owners of Gullion's Christian Supply Center, among the first retailers to sell the "Support Our Troops" magnets, are said to be in a state of shock over the lawsuit, which names Gullion's, Wal-Mart and a group of military wives as defendants. While no one from the Gullion family was willing to speak to the press, a close associate had this to say: "They're just praying right now: for their business, for the SUV owners and for the troops."

Gullion's Christian Supply Center began selling the magnets last year, hoping that church groups and military families could re-sell them to fund care packages, body armor and bibles for the troops. But the Gullion's were quickly undersold by Wal-Mart and other giant retailers that sold similar "Support Our Troops" magnets, made in China, for a fraction of the price charged by the family-run bookstore.

9. If this is true, we really have crossed into The Twilight Zone
Rod Serling, where are you when we need you?

"Presented for your consideration. A law firm with some high-minded ambitions: protecting the inefficient vehicles of the ultra-rich. A Christian store supporting the troops, undercut by corporate retail chains. Soon, they will discover that the highway where they meet leads straight into... The Twilight Zone."

12. They won't hold the president responsible
for the war and 1250 dead soldiers, but will get riled up enough to sue a magnet distributer for marking up their SUV's. Yup, those moral values.

14. Heh--support the troops=support the war
You are either with us or against us.

Sadly, many who are against the war, bought into Bush's meme and sported these yellow ribbons on their cars hoping it would relieve them of the guilt attached to the anti-American Bush meme, attempting, with good intentions, to change the meme or make it into something else, which could not ever have worked, so deeply ingrained was the Bush meme in the minds of those who supported the war. It did NOT work that way and all they did was advertise more their support of the war. It was clear that it was Bush's meme. It would forever stick as an indication that one supported the war and had NO other meaning but that. So we see millions of people with this yellow ribbon supporting the war because that is the way Bush/Rove framed it, even though they, in their minds, think it means something else.

16. extensive damage?
I wondered what exactly constituted extensive damage, what could a little magnet do to such a big bad SUV?

Atlanta, GA businessman Marty Aubuchon found out the hard way that a temporary display of patriotism can end up leaving an all-too permanent impression. Aubuchon drove his 2004 forest green Ford Explorer, complete with two "support the troops" magnets, through a suburban Atlanta car wash last summer. But sometime between washing and waxing, the magnets fell off of his vehicle, leaving two ribbon-shaped scars on his SUVs back-end.

"I support the troops as much as anyone, but I didn't sign up for this," said Aubuchon. His anger and frustration only grew when he took his vehicle to the dealer and learned just how much it would cost to repair the damage. "The problem is that you can't just smooth over the ruined area. You have to paint the entire vehicle." And with the full length of the Ford Explorer measuring in at a whopping 189 inches, that's not a cheap proposition. Aubuchon is hoping that the class-action suit will cover the cost of refinishing his vehicle's back-end, a new paint job and compensate him for the emotional distress he suffered after learning of the extent of his vehicle's damage.

It was a scratch! I don't know what else to say...
