Why aren't the Young or College Republicans
signing up for the military?

Yes, I know...traditionally the rich kids are not the ones who will go to war and soil their hands---

However, I am a returning college student (40 year old female for those who don't know me) and these kids seem nuttier than they used to when I was in my twenties...brainwashed little zombie like weirdos that truly believe that Bush is Great, and that War is Good.

So, what's the scoop? Why aren't they signing up in droves? It seems to me that they would ENJOY getting a gun and driving those hummers in the desert.

3. Hey, I personally offered to teach one of them
a healthy 25 year old boy-how to shoot a rifle (I wasn't kidding by the way, I am one of the Liberal rifle owners) and he got mad at me...would not talk about it with me-

I honestly do not get this one. Are they scared?

9. the wuss is probably as afraid
of a strong woman as he is of the possibility of going to war. i don't blame anyone for being afraid of going to war, but if you don't want to go then you damn well better not be supporting sending other kids.

2. because they are hypocrites, and they deserve a better life by birthright.
it is those who were not endowed with wealth and college circumstances whom God has ordained fight on the frontlines of the Holy War in the End of Days.

4. How do they get so brainwashed?
I don't understand it. I'm 28 and even though I never lived on campus (I was married and working), it was a place for critical thought. What are we teaching our kids if they make it to adulthood unable to think critically?

8. oops, strayed off topic there. As for the OP
My guess is that there's a lot of hollow support. They aren't willing to give up their lives for it.

5. There was a time in our country
when those who 'hid out' at school were considered cowards-the only courageous thing to do was to enlist. Lincoln's son, Robert, was severely criticized for not dropping out of Harvard to enlist-he wanted to, but his mother, who had lost two sons to illness, wouldn't have it. Jay Gould and some of the Gilded Age financiers hired substitutes, but they weren't thought well of at the time. There was still some of this patriotic feeling during WWII, but it seems to have dried up since then.

6. People view the military as something that pays for college for poor kids
Quite frankly the military (outside of the Marines, arguably) doesn't market itself purely as an opportunity to serve the country and its policies. It markets itself as an opportunity for poor kids where they will get an opportunity to go to college. Therefore, College Republicans (and others) view the military as something for "them", the poor kids and minorities.

12. Because the military is a jobs program for POOR kids. The
Young College Republicans will always be employed by their fathers who are corporate vice-presidents or by a phonecall to a friend of the family.

14. i wrote a few letters to editors
right after the election suggesting that they publish the locations of recruiting stations so that the supporters of the war could find them easily. of the millions of people who voted for bush one would expect to see them or their kids rushing to enlist.

15. They don't want to soil their pants....
Those rich kids can hide behind the religious amendment and their daddy can pay off politicians, especially repigs.

I told my nephew not to speak to the Army recruiter in his school. That recruiter needs to be recruiting soldiers for bush in all churchers. Church goers put bush in power, now they need to send off their young people to get their pants soil in Iraq.

...going "bang-bang" in whatever new mind melting game is sweeping the brain cells out of our population.

But the idea of a real bullet ripping through their stomach probably scares the piss out of them.

18. Actually, Half-Life2 *is* pretty sweet
But yeah, they're mostly busy playing Socom, Men of Valor, Call of Duty, and so on.

It's like someone's sig pic here says: Join the Army! It's just like Xbox, only you die.

21. I hate them more than any other Repubs
Luckily for me, they're not nearly as vocal as the Campus Dems at my school. They don't table very often in spite of having all that money swindled from senior citizens. One time, I saw a member of the College Republicans wearing a shirt that said "I Love George Bush". This fool was either really closeted or flamingly gay. That just boggles my mind. And yeah, they should all go enlist for the good of humanity.

22. Same reason they're Republicans: Social Darwinism.
They'll obfuscate the issue if you ask them, of course. But it really boils down to this: most feel that the military is for the poor and the stupid. They'll repeat "volunteer force" about 50 times before you get past it, but keep it up. Poke them long enough and they'll admit it. I've heard it. It's sick.

Modern conservatives believe that success (i.e. wealth) equals intelligence and righteousness. You are poor because you're stupid. You are sick because you're flawed. You are dead in Iraq because that was your function as a worker ant.

24. College Republicans: The Real College Elitists
These kids are mostly rich, and they will let you know it. The Beamers and SVUs they drive, parked outside the fraternity and sorority houses, have their little Shrub stickers on them. They love a good war, because they know that they are never going to have to go. Mommy and daddy will just pull some strings down at the draft board and get that taken care of. And mommy and daddy will get richer because of wars and government contracts. There will be a cushy job waiting for them once they get out of school, or they will just leech off mommy and daddy. Their shit doesn't stink, and they act like campus revolves around them.

26. I'm also a "nontraditional" student....
...who has four years on you and am taking classes at a local community college with kids just out of high school. For the most part, their apathy is appalling. Sometimes I even wonder if they know a war is going on.

It is very sad to see these kids sleepwalking through their lives. In one class most admitted to not following the election because it was "too complicated."

Good grief.

And as for why the kids you know aren't signing up...it's safer to root for something from the sidelines when you know someone else will most likely be doing your dirty work. Then you can bask in all the glory without taking on any of the risks and responsibility. What a deal!
