Everytime they come into a community they drive out the small coffee shops. It happened in my town, 2 local places went out of business.

1. Isn't the parent company of Krispy Kreme
one of the few companies that donates solely to Republicans?

2. Don't dump on Krispy Kreme
That's because the donuts taste good. They are nothing like Walmart.
Jimmy Buffet owns the local Krispy Kreme in WPBeach, and he's a Dem.

3. They taste good?
Yeah, if you like sickly sweetness that makes your teeth hurt and grease that practically shoots out when you bite in.

26.  Jimmy even wrote a song about doughnuts.

Well, about "French doughnuts," aka beignets, in the French Market of New Orleans.

Hit it, Coral Reefers. . .

"The coffee is strong at the Cafe du Monde,
The doughnuts are too hot to touch.
But just like a fool,
When those sweet goodies cool,
I eat til I eat way too much."

6. In addition, they suck
A legendary local donut shoppe (yes, it was one of those) closed its doors after decades in the business. I tried to substitute with Krispy Kreme some weeks later. What a letdown.

That's some seriously overrated donuts.

8. Krispy Kreme came here in October of 2003...
...and no one has gone out of business. We didn't really have any small coffee and doughnut shops.

What I'd like to see here is a Dunkin' Donuts. I much prefer cake doughnuts to yeast doughnuts.

At any rate, I haven't seen any evidence that KK has pulled a Wal-Mart around here.

10. They used to have some Dunkin' Donuts...
...in Oregon and Washington, but I think they're all gone now. At least in the Seattle area, the two remaining franchisees decided not to renew their franchises and started their own independent company, Cafe Donuts (which actually makes pretty good donuts, not all that different from DD).

From what I've heard, the management of DD is very east-coast-centric, and the west coast stores felt they weren't getting sufficient support from the parent company to continue the business relationship.

20. My hubby and I argue over which is better. KK or DD. He likes
DD and I prefer KK. I have often wondered if it is a north-south thing 'cause he is from New York and I have mostly lived in the south.

Oh well, I can't eat either anymore - discovered I have an autoimmune reaction to gluten (protien in wheat) so no more doughnuts or any other good stuff for me. Poor me.

11. When someone asks me if I prefer Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts...
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 10:11 AM by Unstuck In Time
... I tell them that I grew up in an area (and an era) where we had REAL bakeries!

Local businesses -- neighborhood institutions, really -- where everything was baked fresh on site.

KK and DD can't even come CLOSE. Maybe that makes me an East Coast elitist. But oh, how I miss the Wykoff Bakery!

:)

12. Krispy Kremes are too sugary for me.
I liked how lite and fluffy they were, but the sugar just puts me off and I can't eat them.

Dunkin Donuts are always just a little overcooked for my taste (especially the one in my town), but they have the right amount of sweetness.

Now, if only I could find a way to combine the two ... hmmm...

21. interesting factoid
"By its own count, Wal-Mart has 460 terabytes of data stored on Teradata mainframes, made by NCR, at its Bentonville headquarters. To put that in perspective, the Internet has less than half as much data, according to experts."

from nytimes article: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/14/business/yourmoney/14wal.html?oref=login" (registration required).

22. i've NEVER eaten a krispy kreme
something about plain, glazed donuts just doesn't seem appealing. it's funny, i've only ever seen white people RAVE about krispy kremes . . . maybe it's the whole bland mayonnaise/turkey breast phenomenon.

i wonder.

23. Krispy Kremes are pretty damn good when
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 10:10 AM by DemBones DemBones
we get them hot at the huge Krispy Kreme on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta. It's a family joke that all our cars automatically turn into the Krispy Kreme lot when we driving down Ponce.

The doughnuts you get at that store outclass any Krispy Kremes sold elsewhere, and watching the machinery convey them to and from the fryers is an interesting side benefit to getting your doughnuts there. But our local doughnut shop has far better donuts, no doubt about it.

Mmmmm, doughnuts. . .

:donut: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut:
:donut: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut:
:donut: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut:
:donut: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut:
:donut: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut:

(Edited to reformat doughnuts.)

been to a czechoslovakian or polish bakery?

good lord, they make some of the best pastries, the cheese they use is like ricotta, but sweeter, eminently suitable for baking.

33. It's basically the same with all national chains....
whether it's Wal Mart, Lowe's, Home Depot, B Dalton, Blockbuster, Best Buy, etc......they always put the big hurt on local merchants. It applies to any segment of the retail trade.....as well as many other professions and industries.
