3. You don't get the show?
I cannot type that fast, but she is deconstructing the arguements so-called Christian freepers use to do stuff like be pro-fetus and anti-life.

She calls them "pro-birth".

Not pro-lifers.

Now she is quoting the Sermon on the Mount.

5. "Scripture is not a driving test."
We all interpret it differently.

Shit, I want this woman for President!

Now she's being asked about patriarchal catholic church.

She is a catholic because she believes the church is a treasure house of the christian position. (?)

Now she is hitting Bush on his Iraqi war.

You start a thread on something those of us who are tv impaired have no clue about, and then you keep giving us the details. XanaDUer, you rock! I've never heard of Sister Chittister, but now I'm intrigued. I'm so glad someone is out there repeating the Beattitudes. About time. Thanks for sharing! :)

18. I get her weekly articles
and it has given me sanity during this insane year. I have read some of her books, admire her voice greatly and we need more like her, more especially during this "unchristian right" domination. She writes clearly and disinguishes between integrity and morality..there is a difference.

posted on at another place, can we call ourselves the Integrity-based Left as a counter to the faith-based christian right?

15. see this from one of her books
She's a Benedictine sister; this is an excerpt from her book on the Benedictine rule (at the sisters' web page; linked from the National Catholic Reporter next to her column for them).

http://eriebenedictines.org/Pages/INSPIRATION/insights.html

chapter 35....

....

Benedict leaves very little to the imagination or fancy of the spiritually pretentious who know everything there is to know about spiritual theory and think that is enough. Benedict says that the spiritual life is not simply what we think about; it is what we do because of what we think. It is possible, in fact, to spend our whole lives thinking about the spiritual life and never develop one. We can study church history forever and never become holier for the doing. There are theology courses all over the world that have nothing whatsoever to do with the spiritual life. In the same way, we may think we are a community or assume we are a family but if we do not serve one another we are, at best, a collection of people who live alone together.

So, Benedict chooses the family meal to demonstrate that point of life where the Eucharist becomes alive for us outside of chapel. It is in kitchen service that we prepare good things for the ones we love, and sustain them and clean up after them. It was woman's work and Roman men were told to do it so that they, too, with their own hands and over their own hot fires could know what it takes to spend their own lives to give life to the other.

some of the nuns that I had the privilege of studying under. A lot of people are unaware of the liberal, anti-war side of the catholic church. It does exist.

17. Why?
She articulated my beliefs (I am athiest) about abortion and killing better than any democratic candidate did during the entire campaign.

Why can't we have someone represent the democratic party that speaks like she does rather than Donna Brazile, who they seem to always put opposite Bay Buchanan.

24. "America" the Jesuit magazine
and The Irish Echo, the largest Irish-American paper in the country, both continue to attack the Bush administration for the immoral war in Iraq. Ireland, where the Catholic teachings are taken seriously, is overwhelmingly opposed to the Bush administration's war policy. The Catholic church has a heck of a lot of good people in it. Those who are going on about the abuse scandal need to realize that there are more good than bad in the church. It's a serious, serious problem. But the church produces men like Phillip and Daniel Berrigan. And Bishop Oscar Romero. Plenty of nuns who have been active in the fight for social justice.

28. "the catholic church has a heck of a lot of good people in it"
and the fact that the abuse scandals and the bishops and priests who called on people to vote for Bush (or suggested as much) is what some people judge it on is unfortunate.

Part of it goes back to the historic strain of anti-catholicism that has long-existed in this country, IMO.

25. In third world countries and Latin America,
it is not uncommon for Catholic nuns and priests to be activists, and to question their governments' oppressive policies. They join protests on the streets, together with students, laborers, and farmers. I guess they know more than most about their countrymen's suffering and can sympathize with them. And I guess one can say that they are the TRUE compassionate conservatives. In this country, on the other hand, I think it is rare to see activist nuns and priests. To hear of one on TV now speaking out about today's critical issues is a little troubling to me. Where are the other brave voices? And where are the college students, who are supposed to be critical thinkers?
