Texas starts the indoctrination of kids early
Why would a three-year old child be on mind-altering psychotropic drugs?

This Expose by WOAI, Channel 4 exposes what has been happening to children in Texas who are in Foster Care.

At the risk of losing her job, a Child Protective Services worker spoke to the Trouble Shooters following a hearing by State Rep. Carlos Uresti last month. She talked about one child on 17 different medications. That's right. Seventeen!

"I think he had three to four psychotropic medications in addition to the Depakote, in addition to Zoloft, in addition to Trazadone to help him sleep." Some of these drugs the FDA states are not even safe for kids. "He did need medications," she continues, "But I had concerns about how could this child require 17 different medications."

<snip>

"We had a wonderful family of 5 boys," Downey recalls, "If they walked in right now you'd love them to death." The oldest was ten. The youngest was 3.

"We were directed by the state to take the boys to a psychiatrist," Downey says. "We did and they all came back on three meds...those boys no more needed meds than I did."

Patton asks, "Every child?" Downey replies, "Every child." So, why would a three year old need to be on psychotropic medications? "I have no idea. He was just the jolliest little kid," Downey tells us.

Appalling, simply appalling! What is with Texas anyway? Is there something in the water?

2. heh
Psychiatry saved my life. Just because you don't need it doesn't mean it's bull.

And just because it's occasionally misapplied doesn't mean it's bull.

3. But it isn't even psychiatrists who are prescribing the drugs.
Quote from the article:

Who is prescribing these meds? You would think psychiatrists, right? Well, after pouring through thousands of documents, the News 4 WOAI Trouble Shooters found that's not always the case. Many are family practitioners.

State records show one of the biggest prescribers in San Antonio is a radiologist. Sure it's legal, but what does a radiologist know about a child's mental health?

This is probably a scam against Medicaid. The doctors get money for all the children they "treat," and the pharmacists get money for each prescription.

4. It's the $$$$$...
My autistic brother (who isn't even correctly diagnosed) went last month for "med-checK" with a Pysch... we asked about getting his diagnosis and meds updates & the old duck said "what difference does it make, he's never going to get any better!" Then wrote another prescription for 3 meds and sent a $75 bill to my brother's insurance!!

LAST TIME FOR THAT! :grr:

5. Your HMO at work
Being from Texas, I think I could shed some light into all the craziness. Since the the state decided to give the HMOs control over the state's Medicaid, we all have chaos. All thanks to then Gov. Bush. His successor is not doing any much better.

So to cut cost, they decided to play lottery between docs and families. Being a community worker, they really mess things up. People with HIV/AIDS were assigned to radiologies & ear, noise & throat docs. They hardly were giving internist or other appropriate docs. It is crazy down here.

Any Blue Stater know of an openning.....will move to retain saneness.
