Avi Ruben finds security hole in Diebold Source Code!
This is very important news for unraveling the fraud in the 2004 elections!

I'm hoping more comes out today on this...Computer Scientist and E-Vote Activist Ruben and his students are working on it right now.

His short discovery announcement to KOS is

<<Dr. Avi Rubin is currently Professor of Computer Science at John Hopkins University. He "accidently"got his hands on a copy of the Diebold software program--Diebold's source code--which runs their e-voting machines.
Dr. Rubin's students pored over 48,609 lines of code that make up this software. One line in partictular stood out over all the rest:
#defineDESKEY((des_KEY8F2654hd4"

All commercial programs have provisions to be encrypted so as to protect them from having their contents read or changed by anyone not having the key..The line that staggered the Hopkin's team was that the method used to encrypt the Diebold machines was a method called Digital Encryption Standard (DES), a code that was broken in 1997 and is NO LONGER USED by anyone to secure prograns.F2654hd4 was the key to the encryption. Moreover, because the KEY was IN the source code, all Diebold machines would respond to the same key. Unlock one, you have then ALL unlocked.

I can't believe there is a person alive who wouldn't understand the reason this was allowed to happen. This wasen't a mistake by any stretch of the imagination. This was a fixed election, plain and simple.

This second coup d'etat is either stopped now or America ceases to be.>>

At http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/11/10/1172/9052 some responders had the expertise to see the significance of his discovery.

Avi may have "accidentally" got the source code when he worked in the 2004 election in Baltimore county. He may be looking for a way to describe the "accident" that doesn't get him in legal hot water. Diebold has been so secretive that it took a bit of a spy operation to get ahold of that code!

2. I suspect this is Watergate II
and just as the original it will take time

Now I wonder if any mid level manager at either Diebold or Sequoia has a heart and concience, and whether our "heroic Lib'ral press" <Chuckle> will even cover the story....

Ah yes news supresion is the new standard...

3. Someone posted a long freeper argument about this.
Was it successfully debunked or is this still standing?

4. It was "debunked" by saying new code - but folks found same code in
new.

And now they will not let anyone see current code (they released code to public but say that it is not current code!)!!!!

I guess voting is another of those rights that must give way to copyright protection!

6. While it may be news to you....
with all due respect, this is actually an old story. Somehow, I doubt that Dr. Rubin and his students are still working on this right now.

If you follow that thread on dailykos you'll eventually find the link (here it is) to Dr. Rubin's actual report from July 2003 .

Avi may have "accidentally" got the source code when he worked in the 2004 election in Baltimore county.
Oh really ?
And this little gem (no pun intended) of speculation is based on what?
And why would you want to disparage Dr. Rubin's name and research by suggesting that might have done that?

He may be looking for a way to describe the "accident" that doesn't get him in legal hot water. Diebold has been so secretive that it took a bit of a spy operation to get ahold of that code!

An accident, eh? A bit of a spy operation?
Gee I'd love to hear the details of that one.

This is a very important issue. Forgive my sarcasm, but I would encourage you to read up on it - you might even want to start by actually reading Dr. Rubin's report.

Completely baseless speculation, in place of readily available facts, does nothing to help with the issue.

HG

7. July 23rd 2003 to be precise.......
.......however, as many of us are aware, we were also looking at the code well before then. :)

Here's an oldie but goody from July 2, 2003 on the old DU forum.

Strange but it seems that all of the other BBV posts from around that time are now missing from my bookmark list. :( DMCA?
