Bush Wants Line Item Veto
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=544&ncid=544&e=1&u=/ap/20041110/ap_on_go_pr_wh/second_term_line_item_veto_2
Six years after the Supreme Court took away the president's ability to veto specific parts of legislation, President Bush (news - web sites) is asking Congress to bring back the line-item veto to let him make precision strikes against projects and tax provisions he doesn't like.

At a news conference after his re-election, Bush said he wanted a line-item veto that "passed constitutional muster," explaining it would help him work with lawmakers "to make sure that we're able to maintain budget discipline."

6. But of course friend, didn't you get the memo?
Line item veto is for Republican presidents only, not for Democrats.

4. When given a "mandate," why shouldn't a President want a line-item veto?

9. Just thought of why. Bush thinks the mandate is for him to rule over us,
Edited on Wed Nov-10-04 01:59 PM by Inland
not for any particular issue or agenda. The people didn't just say, we want tax cuts, we don't want homosexuals. They said, we want Bush to make all the decisions and for everyone else to stop asking questions. Le mandate, c'est lui.

7. What's good for the goose
Frankly, the line item veto seems reasonable to me. There is always a lot of crap fed into even the noblest bill. We shouldn't lose sight of the fact that it may come in very handy if (when) a progressive becomes president.

8. Who lacked discipline? Bush or Congress?
Whose lack of discipline is responsible for the biggest deficits in our history? Bush, who insisted on huge tax cuts for the rich while putting the country in war? Or Congress, who has not seen a single spending bill threatened with a veto?

Fact is, Bush's line item veto will be the leverage to force MORE spending, and MORE tax cuts, and BIGGER deficits--Bush will threaten to veto all but his favorite big spending and big deficit items.

Whose bright idea is it to give this idiot more power, as if a lack of power is what ails us?

I say, let Bush just use that huge, scary MANDATE if Congress is a problem for Il Duce.

10. He's asking Congress to destroy its own power.
And those short-sighted idiots may give it to him.

Golly.

Here's a man who had a vision: to be dictator. And he's working toward his goals.
