Funny thing... Nixon and Kennedy Said:
If the born agains, election results, and reports of birth control being on the way out make you feel like you are living in the 1950's, you are probably wrong. I think we may be in a less progressive age... Interesting stuff.

From the NYT, October 20, 1960
"Candidates Term Religion Less of an Issue Than in ’28"
By Leo Egan

At the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner the following interesting things were said. Alfred Smith was a Roman Catholic who ran for president in 1928 against Herbert Hoover. He lost. Hoover was a Quaker. The NYT also cites that Nixon was a Quaker.

Kennedy:

"I am confident that whatever their verdict, Republican or Democratic, myself or Mr. Nixon, that their judgment will not be based on any extraneous issue but on the real issues of our time, on what is best for our country, on the hard facts that face us, on the convictions of the candidates, and their parties, and on their ability to interpret them."

Nixon:

"Religion should not be an issue in a campaign… and it will not be, certainly, if those of us who are of goodwill – as Senator Kennedy is, and I am, and we would trust our supporters will be – do everything we can to keep the real issues before the American people by not discussing religion."

2. It was only the issue in 04 because
THE GOP HAD NO OTHER ISSUES TO RUN ON !!!

The Dems and the facts creamed them in the reality-based sector, so they had to pull the Jesus-boogeyman out of their asses to energize the extremists, to divide the rational and label us 'liberals'.

:hippie:

6. Try again. Take a history class. Read a little.
Some of the issues were Phillippine independence, free silver/gold standard, direct elections, nad, of course, the fact that Tammany Hall pushed Parker through as the Dem candidate didn't help.

An interesting perspective in the map for that election. (Roosevelt, R in blue.)

8. Sideways joke. A little humor.
We're all getting too wrapped up about tis. It's cyclical. We'll get it back in '08.

Just an attempt to put things in perspective.

3. Quite noble and exactly what I expect from our country.
1000% in favor of the separation.

The great white man fled England because of imposed religion, then imposed religion on the natives, then were satisfied with the separation of church and state, but now rise up to impose religion on all of us.

It must be stopped. We have no place to flee to. A political religion signifies a doomsday future. Their percentage is only about 37%. It's time to put a stop to imposed religion.
