Tanks in the streets at LA antiwar protest

LOS ANGELES, November 9, 2004 - At 7:50 PM two armored tanks showed up at an anti-war protest in front of the federal building in Westwood. The tanks circled the block twice, the second time parking themselves in the street and directly in front of the area where most of the protesters were gathered. Enraged, some of the people attempted to block the tanks, but police quickly cleared the street. The people continued to protest the presence of the tanks, but about ten minutes the tanks drove off. It is unclear as to why the tanks were deployed to this location. Uploaded here is video from the event.

28. I can't say I'm shocked.
I was 21 years old in May of 1970 when on the 4th day of that month National Guard troops shot to death four Kent State University students, Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder, who were involved in a protest against the war in Vietnam. As tragic as that was, at least at that time America was still united in its belief in democracy. It was only Nixon and the military industrial complex that needed convincing. That is no longer the case. On November 2nd the people spoke just as people once spoke in Germany to elect Adolf Hitler. Remember today's date. These two tanks are the first we have seen. They won't be the last. God help us.

65. From my understanding of documentaries I've seen
Some of those students murdered were not protesting. Some just got caught in the cross fire on their way to class!

But I wasn't there so I only know what I've seen on the TV, and articles that I've read.

It is not right in any case for the military to raise up against the citizens of this country.

82. Sandra and William weren't involved in the protest.
In fact, Schroeder, a Lorain, Ohio native, was in ROTC and shot while in uniform. Just before the firing began, he told one of his friends walking past the Guard "Don't worry, they aren't using real clips."

168. This was a test balloon....They want to see how or if the great unwashed
will react, whether the media will cover it, and whether anyone will investigate who gave the order for the tanks to make an appearance and call to task whoever was responsible.

I agree....stand by for much more of this.

155. Look for the return of only those troops who sign those 'pray for bush'
pledges. All others will be held hostage overseas by our government for the duration of the war at home.

There is a reason the reserves & guardsmen got sent overseas. The junta does not any and real 'citizen soldiers' stateside. They learned much watching the fall of the USSR. They learned that young men in uniform, in most instances, will not fire on their grandmothers and mothers.

Man, so much whirling through my brain right now. So many pieces failing into a picture.

All the new highways they have been working on here in Montana in the middle of nowhere... we teased that they were expecting heavy traffic, interment camps and all. Damn it all to hell...

We'll meet again.

He bragged (after a few drinks) that he was on full scholarship at Tulane University and was here for a special purpose - he said he was sponsored by a powerful local Jewish group with ties to Washington. It's funny, he wasn't even invited to the party as it was a birthday party for a French student of Arab decent, after he bragged about his IDF conquests, none of the girls would even stand near him.

It's a free newswire, and sometimes the big news services have used Indy material.

So you might see these photos eventually accompanying stories in the corporate media, if they can't find another source.

PC does NOT apply to actions in which the military is used to protect buildings, property or people, or to maintain or restore order in case of civil disturbance.

Why do you think the national guard gets called out during riots, etc?

While I don't LIKE the fact it APPEARS someone overreacted and called out APCs to a non-violent protest, it is OBVIOUSLY not a violation of PC.

250. The Constitution of the United States is the Supreme Law of the Land
and it guarantees The People to right to peacefully assemble "and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." I going to go out on a limb here and say protesting the U.S. government for launching an illegal, immoral war, illegal in the sense it violates the rules of the U.N. (if not your conscience), immoral in the sense the estimates are 100,000 innocent civilians have been killed, based on a lie, constitutes petitioning the Government for a redress of grievances.

ANd I'd expect almost the same reaction as that which happened in China. The people completely caved in.

After all, we had over a thousand soldiers killed for a war based on BS and a majority of people actually reelected the SOB.

212. Mine as well
We said to our leaders, "Do something. Please!" and we thought, how do people become so coldhearted that they'd just mow down someone they disagree with? We thought it was just more evidence of the differences between the Chinese and us.

Now we see it is merely the absolute worst in human nature allowed to wreak havoc on anyone and anything it chooses.

These words comfort me:

About the current Administration:

"When I fed them, they were satisfied;
when they were satisfied, they became proud;
then they forgot me.
So I will come upon them like a lion,
like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
Like a bear robbed of her cubs,
I will attack them and rip them open.
Like a lion I will devour them."
From Hosea 13

These are words Bush********says he believes. Beautiful animal imagery there, wrought against the Official Nature Hater himself! How fitting....

I'm glad he believes them, because if they are true, this administration will get its reward from the Great Vindicator.
And even though I am a compassionate person, I wait patiently for the day Republicans have the burns and the screams they love to inflict on innocent children a world away.

God is watching, if God is.
And he, she, or it hears every scream and watches every tank...

and who ordered them out? From a quick Google, it seems there is only one Stryker Brigade in the NG and it is located in Pennsylvania.

"They are part of a more than 3,000-member Stryker Brigade, a combat team the National Guard activated yesterday during a ceremony in the drizzling rain. The Stryker Brigade is one of six in the Army and the only National Guard team."

32. If so, doesn't that bring up a posse comitatus issue?
Just the other day, I was warning people that if commanded to do so, the troops might indeed comply with orders to turn their guns on dissenting Americans.

I would like to be wrong about this, but still: that's what occurs to me every time someone tells us that the troops gave us our right to speak freely (and that we should therefore just shut up about the war).

Seriously: there's no mention anywhere of California authorities (ie, the Governator) calling up the National Guard for this demonstration.

And even if they had been summoned by the appropriate state authority, why would they send a couple of tanks to a street protest?

Judging from the photo the barrel might be either 50cal or possibly 20mm. In either case using heavy caliber weapons on people is a violation of the Geneva Convention, or so we were instructed. Heavy caliber weapons were to be used against equipment and positions only. This rule was universally ignored.

31. Kent State, 1971, 4 Students murdered by National Guard
and people wonder why I don't blindly support "our" troops.

If ordered these troops will murder us without questioning their orders. I've already seen the hatred of cops in California as a college student.

I feel sadness for each INDIVIDUAL military person who is killed in this stupid war.

But NEVER will I give blind support for the troops.

These same troops WILL murder unarmed citizens.

And so it begins.

Did the Governor order out the troops -- that's what Raygun did during the "troubles" of the anti-war protests.

US tanks crush Iraqi protesters: police

At least two followers of Shiite Muslim radical leader Moqtada Sadr have been killed after throwing themselves in front of US tanks during a demonstration in central Baghdad.

"There were two or three dead among the protestors who threw themselves under American tanks, which could not avoid them on Tahrir square," said Sergeant Abbas Mohamad.

This bush administration, reinforced by stolen votes no one can prove/disprove because of no accountability voting machines, may well decide to call them "enemy combatants", "threat to the boy emperor", "you pissed off my daddy miscreant citizens" as in Saddam Hussein "pissed off my daddy" ... and they may all disappear to some rig who knows where or some unseen tent out in guantanamo bay.

46. Tanks in the Streets...
This is it. When the first shot is fired and innocent American blood is drawn at the hands of a tyrranical government, the slumbering giant will finally awaken.

Even the 30 some-odd percent of Americans who actually voted for a man who approved of such actions will not stand for this type of blatant oppression on their own soil.

Unfortunately, the ballots for the last election ever to be held in the United States have been cast, and this administration doesn't need to play by the rules of common decency anymore.

Read the rightwingnut blogs; we're described and demonized in the EXACT SAME WAY HITLER DEMONIZED the JEWS.

It makes it much easier to KILL PEOPLE when they're demonized as filthy traitorous scum; as non-human; as vermin.

When they start killing us, we won't be Americans, we won't be fellow countrymen; we'll be the "filthy vermin scum who hate America".

Well, factoring in the likelihood of fraud in the last election, I'd say that there's a healthy majority of Americans who are aware of the sickness engendered by this administration. Such a majority, of course, was not represented in the national media.

Most patriotic, rational Americans, upon seeing this video, would undoubtedly take pause; set their politics aside, shaking their head in disbelief at what this government is capable of - what was authorized by a mixture of ignorance and neglect on the part of the American people. Such oppression, of course, will not be represented in the national media.

Soon, I fear, it will be commonplace to see "Riots Break Out; 7 Killed" buried somewhere in our morning papers.

I watched NBC news at 11:00 tonight, primarily to see the protest footage. Strangely, there was NOTHING about tanks! They showed the protesters, their signs, they even spoke to one...not at thing on the tanks. Cripes...I feel sick and kind of scared.

Honestly, I only came back to the boards tonight to find out if anyone knew what group it was that protested tonight. I wanted to Congratulate them for getting on the news tonight and find out when their next protest is. I didn't expect to see this.

Yikes...

although the program is not really designed for it, I do know of video editors who use it.

I can think of ways that you could possibly do it...maybe. It would be extremely painstaking work since you would have to perfectly match together literally hundreds of frames, but it could be done. I don't know if one could do it well enough for professionals to be totally fooled, though.

This is so frightening. I have always been more frightened of B* and his monstrous lying administration than the terrorists. Here is the most graphic visual of that. Right after another coup d'etat. I'm glad this was e-mailed to Olbermann. I'm no longer watching anything else, until they provide coverage of the elephant in the room--election FRAUD. Bets on whether or not this will be covered.

The day I graduated from med school Tienemann Square occured. This looks like a prelude...actually what's the difference?

IMO..everyone should be sending any buried news to international media on serious scale. This story is a MUST, as far as I'm concerned.

Bernard Parks, the ex chief, would never have allowed that crap!
This new Bremmer(sp?) thinks he knows so much about gangs and stuff.
They had a gang war a few months ago and he was pleading with the public to help him solve it.

He looks like a busher to me.

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/lav-25.htm

The headlights and weapon is consistent as is the structures on the side when the vehicle drives away....

Probably used as a reconissance, night capable...amphibious

no doubt they sent these in to eval the situation and do a threat assesment. Once satisfied they either leave or call in APC with 11 men in each to subdue the crowd.

I would guess that this a homeland security operation...

Being it occured in front of a federal building....

THose hitting the streets should get used to seeing these in the future.

If you attack them or start destroying property then the shit will hit the fan...

166. Now that's scary.
I used to live near the Federal Building on the Santa Monica side of Centinela. There were always protests of one sort or the other going on during the weekend. Every now and then a police car would drive around and check out the protesters and then drive off. I never saw tanks or any military around, even though the Reserves were on the far end of the federal property.

So many people are reminded of Kent State, where white students were tragically murdered.

Tanks in the streets reminds me of Detroit in the 60's. Of course the tanks weren't in the white neighborhoods.

Students being murdered reminded me of Orangeburg.

The Orangeburg Massacre

It was February 8, 1968 and Orangeburg, South Carolina was a night filled with anger and frustration. Patrolmen randomly fired on a crowd of student demonstrators. 27 students were shot and 3 young men died from the incident only in a matter of seconds. Henry Smith, a family oriented 20-year old college student at South Carolina State was shot in the side and back five times; Delano Middleton, a 17-year old high school student was shot in the hip, the thigh, the side of his chest, his heart and three times in the forearm; and Samuel Hammond, a promising 19-year-old high school student who attended a newly integrated school was killed by one shot in the back. What led to the massacre was a demonstration at a bowling alley that did not admit Blacks. 200 students gathered around a bonfire built on a campus street, only to find it to be smothered by the police. Some students retaliated by throwing rocks and bottles at the officers. The students eventually built another bonfire when the patrolmen left and that was when the trouble started. Police returned to the scene to put the fire out, only this time, someone hit a patrolman with a banister post and more objects were thrown.

After the slaughter, news spread of a gun battle between the Black students and officers. The officers, with the support of the government blamed the students for what occurred yet it was later found out that none of the students held firearms and that not one of the patrolmen followed correct riot procedures. A number of those shot wounded were shot in the feet while laying on the ground. Though the patrolmen used unacceptable means to control the demonstration, they were eventually pardoned. This is a typical story of many challenges Blacks had to face in 1968 America. It was a cry for Civil Rights.

The tragic events in Orangeburg have been turned into a clever "theme" by a young group of white musicians, apparently.

while there. This tank at a peaceful demonstration really bothers me (like a portent of what's to come), and then I read your post about the petition (What are you afraid of!) and I signed it--put it off yesterday because in a way I am afraid of these people targeting me...but truth and democracy are more important than fear. I want people to know what an immoral pig, who was supposedly elected on "moral issues", B* really is; I'm hoping that an investigation into fraud will expose him.

Thanks again for sharing the photos.

BTW: I was # 10,505 and then checked an error, and in the couple of seconds that took, the number was already up to #10,539!

219. Freedom is on the march....Kerry conceded "for the good of the nation"
A few days ago, in Tomkins Square, NYC - an army of policemen occupied about 5 blocks to deal with a group of teen punks (I believe they had a show in the park). I asked one of them what happened: police started hitting us, we broke the windows of a van, now they are beating the s* of some kids in the park"
Helicoptes with laser lights were flying about. It looked like a war zone.
Get used to these stories.

First robbed, then beaten.
