Neo-cons are getting scary, not stupid on gay issue
After watching the news and watching some quotes on the Daily show and other media outlets. I've realized something scary, all this hub-bub about homosexuality is more than just typical conservative stupidity, they have declared war on homosexuals. Think about that, it really hit me this evening. And it's a scary thing. All the work homosexuals have done over the years means nothing now. This regression and aggresion can only be met head on. Good luck, don't stop the fight.

3. So. All the gays leave the Red Zone for California and New York.
You know what that means? More electoral votes!

Go on, fellas drive 'em out! Men, women, force them to go!

I know some really good places to rent.

6. Actually...
I think you liberals should move South or to the mid-West.

A.) We have more room (seriously, we have a lot more open space and wouldn't be on top of one another, figuratively, of course).
B.) We need you guys to help save our Great Smoky Mountains National Park, our trees, our parks. Mold and pollution are up in astronomical numbers because of emissions (mold, of course, from the increase in humidity). Nuts around here don't seem to understand innitiative.
C.) I don't REALLY want to have to move away from Mom, God and everything (OK... God IS everywhere!) to find a decent man to marry!!
D.) You guys would help bring up ALL our wages!!
E.) Diversity is needed to knock down fear. The more people grow up around different cultures, lifestyles, whatever, the less likely they are to be ruled by fear.

(NOTE: C is a personal plea. I'm DYING down here! LOL! The rest are legitimate points.)

11. Even though it makes a sort of sense
I for one couldn't stand to leave my red state for California or New York. The land is beautiful, and the people, although somewhat deluded about our current governmental situation, are relatively nice most of the time. But then again, I did choose to drop out from society and live on the side of a large hill/small mountain in the middle of the woods. Go figure.

33. On the other hand...
If you're gay in the Big Apple you're less likely to enjoy the scenery by being left to die on a fencepost. We're now just about as rural as its safe to be for gay folks in this country. The Red State danger is real.

4. I have a theory on that.
They've seen the polls of people under 30. They see people under 30 thinking that marriage is for all. They see polls showing that 3/4 of all high schoolers approve of equal marriage rights. People under 30 are much less likely to sign-onto the Religious Right anti-homo agenda. And while people get more conservative as they age, they largely don't go from tolerant to bigoted. So even if there's 5 to 10% erosion of the pro-gay sentiment in people under 30 demographic, there's still a majority in favor of equality.

The bottom line? The Religious Right sees this as their last chance. Before the old way of thinking about GLBT begins to die-out, they have seized power and are now hoping to get the marriage amendment passed before it's too late for them. Within 10 years, the under-30 demographic will be part of a demographic that votes much more often. That'll spell doom for anti-gay politicians and eventually anti-gay initiatives.

Their last chance.. their last gasps.. before the emerging democratic majority and the new generations begin to really shape the overall electorate. I'm kinda afraid of what they'll do when they realize that their window has passed.

8. I sort of think you are right. It is another vote getter.
I also think the whole country is in a great movement as the world is. Things are not ever going to be like they were and the Right Wing nuts are really on the way out but Bush and Co have cashed in on this last leap for power. We have had these God things before. Even the Dem had better wake up. The whole world seems to be on a new move. Look at the countries that are becoming Dem. Maybe not just as we like but it must be over 100 and I am sure that number is way over when I was a kid. In the 40's, and the one thing you can always count on is things do not stay the same. It will really be hard to bring this country back to where ever these Right wing people want it and think it was better. Can not be done.

5. It's beyond that.
I got into trouble the first time I said this. Yes, I got into trouble right here in DU. I said that the liberals were the new Jews. Well I have to admit at that time no one realized we were being done in by American Nazis, Nazis, get used to the label. Since, here in America we can't divide people in the old fashioned ways, the new Nazis found "liberal" to be very handy scapegoat. So even if you aren't liberal, but if you fit into gay or women or other undesirables, elitist liberal is a great label to stick on you.

7. Actually most neo-cons couldn't care less about gays...
Rumsfeld's chief assistant was gay, Bill Kristol has addressed the Log Cabin Delusionals several times. Neo-cons, by definition, are new conservatives, worried more about plundering the wealth of countries full of brown people than anything else. That's why the "paleo-cons", or shall we say Neandrathals, hate them so much.

The German Nazis really didn't care either as long as the moral people didn't know.

15. You missed my point.
I loathe Rumsfeld as much as most, and Kristol is a whiny punk who would be nowhere without his daddy (like someone else we know?) But gay issues are not a neo-con issue. Most neo-cons are "reformed" liberals who have seen the light on national security issues, but retain their social libertarian streak.

If you read "Blinded By the Right" by Brock, he sums it up well there. Gays, abortion, stem-cells don't matter because the BOOGEY-MAN is coming, and wants to destroy our freedom!

21. I get that a lot.
Sorry. My post was just a "know your enemy" sort of rambling...

Neo-Con = Strong on national defense, generally social libertarian, with an eye on world domination. i.e. Andrew Sullivan or Chris Shays

Paleo-Con = Wants things like they were in the 1950s (socially) and 1890s (financially). i.e. Pat Buchanan or Bob Novak.

Real Conservative = Don't spend more money then you have income, don't invade countries lightly, and keep the government out of people's private lives. i.e. uhhhh, can't really think of any of those at the moment....

24. nope, those are so-called "paleocons"
Neocons are imperialist hawks with generally permissive social views, like Richard Perle, David Horowitz, Andrew Sullivan, Lucianne Goldberg, Matt Drudge, Chris Hitchens, etc.

Paleocons are the "moral issue" folks, like Santorum, Clarence Thomas, and their ilk.

Most real neo-cons would vote against a gay marriage ban themelves, but then work the phone banks non-stop calling Christian Coalition members to get them to the polls.

26. absolutely. that's the tragic thing. masses of people are being played..
...like nintendo. the neocons don't give a shit about the christian agenda, just give em what they want--to a degree, so they'll vote for your man when needed. The entire neocon thing is basically "take what you want if you have the strength to do it."

29. I agree with you. They'll use any wedge issue they can

to hold onto power, but their priorities are geopolitical. They don't care about gays, per se. They'd dump the issue in a second if it stopped working as a wedge.

The only domestic agenda the neocons have displayed is the consolidation of power in the office of the presidency, and the expansion of the police state. It's all about power for neocons. That's the only consistent theme.

On the other hand, the neoconservatives are a relatively small part of the Republican Party, and they've used fundamentalists as a stepping stone to power. Fundamentalists really do have an anti-gay agenda, and they believe in it. The Republicans have taken a tiger by the tail in mobilizing the fundamentalists, though I'm not sure they realize it.

I have known worse. Believe me.

20. To build that mob mentality you gotta have something to fear and hate.
And the dark side NEEDS that mob mentality, whipped by fear and hate. Think about it. They have to preach hate and intolerance. What if people really sat down and thought about gays they knew. Friends of theirs, family members. What if people LOGICALLY thought about gays. No one really wants to see gays persecuted. However, the nasty bastards creating and then harnessing the mob mentality need someone to point the mob at. And they know most men in the US have underlying issues with their "gay" side. Hey, it's not anyone's fault. It's the way we all were raised. For being one of the most sex-centric societies, we are so hung-up and sexually dysfunctional it's pathetic.

31. Gays are being used as an example of what they are capable
of doing to any group which seeks to temper their power. We've already seen them hinting at what they will do to get women in line. They've systematically put the screws to the press until it is whimpering and mewling. Who will stand up and be counted?
