Over a year ago, I wrote an mystery/romance novel with a voting machine fraud and computer espionage plot. I got the idea when Georgia bought all those screwy Diebold machines. After a few email exchanges with the Secretary of State's office, I concluded that those people had NO clue about computer security or proper QA procedures.
When I was brainstorming about the design of my fictitious voting system, I realized that there was no way in hell any reader would believe my hero was the genius I said he was if he built a system anything like the one in Georgia. :-) I had to make one up from scratch. Microsoft Access as a secure database for a voting system?! I think not!
I'm in the middle of some edits for it, but I'll be wrapping them up soon so that I can send out some queries by early January. One thing I've had to do is shift genres a bit to gear it to a techier, less conventional fiction market. Computer and roleplaying game geeks as romantic heroes and heroines aren't a particularly good fit for contemporary single title romance. :-)
