Return of the Comstock Laws: Pharmacists refuse to give birth control

For a year, Julee Lacey stopped in a CVS pharmacy near her home in a Fort Worth suburb to get refills of her birth-control pills. Then one day last March, the pharmacist refused to fill Lacey's prescription because she did not believe in birth control.

"I was shocked," says Lacey, 33, who was not able to get her prescription until the next day and missed taking one of her pills. "Their job is not to regulate what people take or do. It's just to fill the prescription that was ordered by my physician."

Some pharmacists, however, disagree and refuse on moral grounds to fill prescriptions for contraceptives. And states from Rhode Island to Washington have proposed laws that would protect such decisions.

****

Moral values my ass. All the regressive right wants is complete government regulation of the individual.

It's a dark day... I need birth-control pills to control anemia and thus prevent a heart attack, which I've nearly already had.

At 38.

2. Not just birth control; antidepressants, anti-psychotic;
hell, isn't it God's will that I've taken insulin for 38 years???

Why not just cut me off of that as well?

3. This could be interesting...
CVS (which recently bought Eckerd, and has botched the transition pretty badly) is now in a position where its employees are setting not only policy, but impacting profits by their religions decisions.

Hmmm. Let's see how long the CFO stands for that. Especially when the next quarter is likely to be down (in adjusted terms) from last year due to the acquisition problems.

6. Good point
It is interesting that 'moral values' can come into play over something like birth control pills but not over other areas of life.

Does the pill really need a prescription anymore? I mean why isn't this a transaction between the patient and the doctor?

Will these pharmacies stop selling condoms next?

Quite honestly, I'm going to make it my personal effort to brand any pharmacy that refuses to provide any prescribed medication as a threat to national health. It is not the pharmacists place to judge what is medically necessary. Allow me to go a bit exteme, but there is a brand of thyroid medication that is made out of meat. Should a hyper-strict vegetarian animal rights pharmacist be allowed to deny filling that particular prescription due to personal moral preferences?

5. If pharmacists don't believe in birth control then
the women should just withhold sex.

Most religious fanatics I know just love sex.

7. So does that mean I could get away with...
...yanking the pencilnecked a$$hat over the counter and beating him to gelatin with one of the canes in the rack right next to the pharmacy window?

I mean, if I told the police that it was expected of me by God, as part of my faith, to beat the crap out of complete strangers who seized control of my healthcare and my privacy, does that mean I could get away with it? After all, I used the magic words that are supposed to allow anything: "it's part of my right to practice my religion."

9. I say go for it it. "It's my religion" is today's blanket excuse...
... for every sort of horrible behavior. Toss in a "Jay-zuss loves me" for good measure, and you can get away with anything.

10. Since when the fuck did the pill become abortion?
Oh my God! These people are fanatics, not Christians, and definately not Americans. It's like a cult.

If you have a moral problem with YOUR JOB, find another fucking job! Don't torture the rest of us.
