So I was just visited by some Jehova's witnesses...
Two middle aged/elderly black women came by. This is in NYC.

They loved the "not my president" pic I have taped on my apartment door.

She quoted several passages about how in the end times, people will claim to be men of god and will use religion though they are not men of god.

We talked for a while, she gave me some "literature" and said she would come back.

Now, I'm not particularly partial to doomsday religions, but this could be useful. These people are tenacious, as I'm sure some of you have seen. They might be receptive to ideas like the Red Boycott. If we can spread within them the meme that shrubco may be the antichrist, or anything like that, it could be a useful window.

Has anyone had a similar experience, or an opposite experience? (meaning JWs that support *?) Anyone have any suggestions for ideas that I might want to infect them with?

1. One problem - they don't vote
I could be wrong about this but I believe their religion tells them to stay out of politics and not voting is a part of that.

6. They may still be useful...
If they can convert people who would otherwise become talibornagains, or even just as a mouthpiece.

Are they the ones who don't like blood transfusions?

8. True they do not vote.
Work with a few JWs. BTW, All three are a very decent, caring, commpassionate men. I did not suspect they were even religious, till someone told me they were JWs. I can confirm the non-voting thing.

33. Yup, they don't. My friend is one, and they don't.
Oddly she is very democratic in her thinking, to bad we couldn't get them to vote. I think it fails within there Objector status type of thing.

although oddly enough, the JWs I've talked to have had some pretty "lefty" opinions

I guess I just don't know enough about them.

3. had some JW's come to my door here in L.A...
and while I made it clear that, as a Jewish Sunday school teacher, I wasn't looking for a new religion, we talked about "scripture" awhile, and they did go on about false piety in leaders, men appearing to hew to the word of God while working for, well, the Dark Side, etc.

I agreed with the time about the deception/manipulation we face from our current crop of "leaders."

They weren't quite like evangelical fundies. There seemed to be a capacity to allow we weren't being led by good guys, right now...

They shun all things political as it is seen as a distraction from their service to God.

5. Witnesses do not support any President...

They only see Jahova as the allmighty leader... They do not recongnize any government, regardless of their values... They are not allowed to even sing Patriotic songs... Or celebrate Holidays and Birthdays...

9. Jehovah witnesses are not allowed to support politicians
They don't even vote since they cannot pick leaders other than god, they can't even worship the flag because you are only allowed to worship god. Jehovah witness don't register to vote because they are not going to be sent to hell whenever Armageddon comes.

I find it very odd that Jehovah witnesses would make such comment about the president because they have no say in the elections.

Evangelicals are the problem and that's probably who came to your door.

18. Yep, probably small talk to get in...
and annoy you with nonsense. My grandma is JW (the only one in the family BTW to fall for this crap) and she always tries to convert people in my family with no success for years. But she never gives up. :-)

I feel bad for them because they actually believe they are saving you from being destroyed whenever the end of world comes. But I sometimes have to be rude otherwise they won't leave you alone. :-)

Too bad they don't vote because the JW I know hate Bush for being a warmonger and against social justice.

scriptures dealing with false prophets and the dangers of being led astray by them.

I'll bet you donuts to a dollar that all of the Rights bluster about W being on some Messianic mission of God set off all the JWs "false prophet" alarms.

10. Speaking of doomsday religions...
I've come to the conclusion that people waiting for the rapture are members of a huge doomsday cult, every bit as deluded (maybe more so) as the jihadis who think they'll be greeted by 27 virgins or however many it is.

Just my .02...

any other religion or cult if it is allowed to progress unchecked. History is full of examples of religious whackos allowed to go haywire; The Spanish Inquisition, The Crusades, The Holocaust.

15. I've found them to be much like
everyone else. Some are obnoxious, most are pretty decent.

I remember 25+ years ago, my father was helping me with an addition on my house. I had gone in to fetch a couple beers, and heard some commotion. My father had let my dog loose on some JWs who were in the driveway. When they came up, my father kept dogging them, saying the bible said to help your brother, and trying to hand them shovels.

I ended up on good terms with a few of those people that day. A couple continued to visit me. Although they are "other-worldly," these two women would help me when I did food & clothing drives for the Onondaga and Mohawk Territories. I introduced them to many of the Onondaga people, and it was never a matter of one group trying to "convert" the other. Rather, it was mutual respect among people who recognized the advantages of living in the margins of the empire.

21. I've met some interesting JWs over the years
I disagree with their beliefs, but I understand many of the reasons why they reject aspects of modern society. I can see where they would find the way Christmas is celebrated to conflict with their beliefs, for example. Or why they don't endorse political candidates.

The women made a good point about people being deceived by men claiming to be of God, but being quite the opposite and deceiving the believers. I've always thought that in any religion, there are always a group who are willing to follow a leader off a cliff.

... and, while most of them are decent people, as a group, they won't help in boycotts and such. If a draft returns, they will not go to war, but will choose to serve time in prison.

They will also keep coming back, if you let them.

were jailed for refusing to be conscripted (and MANY died in prison). I have always honored them for that. The JWs are sincerely anti-war.

First of all, as everyone has said, they do not get involved politically.

Secondly, if you are friendly to them, you will NEVER get away from them. You will be visited at all hours. Be overwhelmed with literature. Get phone calls. It will be a mess.

31. For some sad reading, Google "Why I Left" Jehovah's Witnesses
There are some of the saddest, most tragic stories about sincere JW believers who left because their dying child wasn't allowed a blood transfusion or similar horrific stories. Of course, after leaving the JWs, they are shunned, which in small communities leads to more tragedy.

Do not let these people get a toe hold in the door. They will keep coming back.

Christian or Cult

The JWs are a Deluded Cult engaged in MIND CONTROL and capturing innocent people out there. They want their SOULS but in reality, they want more bodies in their Kingdom Halls.

They have been captured themselves and are wrapped up with this crap of saving your soul.

They will not play politics with anyone, period.

Run away and let them be.
