NEAR FALLUJAH - With US forces massing outside Fallujah, 35 marines swayed to Christian rock music and asked Jesus Christ to protect them in what could be the biggest battle since American troops invaded Iraq last year.

Men with buzzcuts and clad in their camouflage waved their hands in the air, M-16 assault rifles beside them, and chanted heavy metal-flavoured lyrics in praise of Christ late on Friday in a yellow-brick chapel.

The marines drew parallels from the verse with their present situation, where they perceive themselves as warriors fighting barbaric men opposed to all that is good in the world.

Of the crusades into the middle east, we usually landed and killed everything that wore a djelaba, robes, or a turban. Unfortunately, many christians wore clothes too - we didn't much care.

Stories like that make it very difficult to say that I unquestioningly support our troops.

5. Its no different

Than any other battle our soldiers have fought. They always pray. Ain't too many atheists in foxholes. It probably makes them feel safer, and gives them some comfort. Plus, maybe they're asking for forgivenesss ahead of killing people.

Just don't think this is that "new" of news - soldiers praying to win before battles.

9. It's not new, but now it's less transperant

With all the faith talk i'm seeing all the nuts come out. Even some of the marines are affected. My only problem is the fact that the "terrorists" are also fighting for their god, if we take the same ideological approach then we are no better, advocating violence in the name of our own concept of god. This is what makes me worry, religion is what makes people strap suicide explosives to their chest.
