Harry Reid
I do not think Harry Reid should be the minority leader in the Senate. I think it is putting people like Harry Reid in charge of the Democratic Party that has cost us seats in the Senate. The Democratic Party should not move to the right. We must move back to the left. We should push to have Russ Feingold as the leader in the Senate. That way we present a clear alternative to the Republican Party. I was listening to Morning Sedition this morning and heard that people were looking to a clear alternative to Bush. We need to start putting out a clear alternative.

1. Harry Reid will do fine fighting Bush on Soc. Sec. and tax issues.
Reid knows what he is doing on the bread and butter issues that will help us win back more moderate voters.

6. Agree
I think Reid *should* be the Senate minority leader.

He's got a 100% score from the AFL-CIO meaning he's on the left on economic issues. On social issues, he's a moderate.

And that's precisely the combination that will help us take back flyover country for the Democratic Party. We need to start pushing hard on bread and butter issues that affect the common people, and drop things like gun control that shouldn't be on the national party agenda to begin with.

Harry Reid's also a fighter. He has taken up issues that others ignore, like opposition to nuclear dumping at Yucca Mountain, and voting rights for ex-felons. Because of those two issues alone, he should have the strong support of any progressive.

Harry Reid can bring together the different wings of our party with the right combination on the issues.

2. I don't know much about Reid, but I love Russ.
He's my senator and he crushed a pro-patriot act, pro-life, total wingnut. I'd like to see it, but there are seniority issues and things like that, aren't there? Not that it should stop them.

What we need is a clear platform. Clear enough for the dumbest of us to understand. We cannot continue to be viewed as a bunch of elitists and expect to win. Those Americans of low intelligence, who buy into all the distortions of fact presented by the right, need our help more than anyone. They must be convinced that when they vote republican, they are not voting in their own interest.

But, I'm preaching to the choir here.

3. I'm sorry, Reid is a good guy but...
We cannot afford to have another moderate Democrat from a red state as leader. He is going to be looking over his houlder constantly just as Daschle did. Not to mention that he is anti-choice.

7. I agree with you!
I have spoken to some who voted for * and they said, Kerry offered nothing new (war wise). That tells me that we didn't go left enough, need to have a clear difference to offer the people. (imho)

4. I agree
Any senator who has to do a balancing act because he might not get elected again, needs to step aside. I sick and tired of having to put Democrats in positions of power who have to placate their consitutents at all costs. Select a Senate minority leader from a safe blue state who can yield the power effectively.

5. Senate Minority Leader has other functions besides party spokesman
Edited on Mon Nov-08-04 10:58 AM by pse517
He needs to be able to get things done (or stop them from getting done) in the chamber and from what I have heard Reid is the best guy to tie the Senate into knots with his understanding of the rules and the ways of the Senate. If he is not good on TV, he won't be on TV much. Let someone like Obama be the public face of the opposition in the media, but we're going to need someone who is effective at stalling the Republican aganda in the chamber. If there is someone who can do a good job at both, great, but I'm not willing to endorse someone who might be less effective at blocking Republican legislation in the Senate for that job just because they're the most liberal and closest to my views.
