41. Faith versus Works

My best friend and I were discussing this at lunch yesterday with a republican collegue. A local Baptist church has raised millions of dollars to build a gym, swimming complex, and soccer fields. My friend and I were saying that with all the people out of work, living in housing projects or not having a home at all, we couldn't understand how churches could spend their money to build facilities meant to bring in middle class people. Our republican collegue said, "It's not the church's job to take care of the poor." My friend and I both looked at each other dumbfounded. This person believes that the government shouldn't take care of these people, and now she's saying the church shouldn't either. My friend and I in unison said, "According to the Bible it is the church's job to take care of the poor!" Our collegue completely disagreed. UGH! This is the problem. The religious conservatives have totally forgotten (or deliberately reject) what Jesus taught.

The mainline denominations still teach social responsibility. They preach the values of good works. Evangelical congregations often ignore these principles or denounce them outright - with "Faith not Works" being a rallying cry. I have actually heard sermons in evangelical congregations suggesting that the book of James shouldn't be in the canon of scripture, because of its focus of "faith without works is dead."

How do we reconcile the fact that many people who claim to be Christians are selfish? They claim to be concerned about people's souls, but show no compassion whatsoever for people's conditions here on earth. They have no problem tithing in order to build new church buildings and programs, but refuse to help the poor. My contention is that mainstream denominations are on the decline because of the selfish nature of most Christians. They go to church in order to feel good about themselves. They leave the mainline churches because there's too much guilt in the prospect of all those in the world who are hurting and suffering. In addition, many left-leaning people have left the church, because of the Falwells and Robertsons. They still believe in the concepts taught by Jesus, but they don't wish to be associated in any way with a religion so full of hate and intolerance. There are many such people here on DU.

My suggestion is that we people who connect with the teachings of Jesus, but reject the religion of hate and intolerance need to return to the mainline denominations. We need to support them and build them up. By increasing their numbers, we will increase their influence.

So, get out there and find a Unitarian congregation or a Presbyterian (USA), United Church of Christ, or similar denomination and join with them to reclaim Christianity from the hands of these imposters who go around claiming to speak for Jesus, but whose actions show that they have no idea who Jesus really is.

We have been searching for a church for years. We have joined 5 churches in the last 12 years looking for a home. We are visiting a new Disciples of Christ congregation tomorrow. That's the denomination I grew up in. Hopefully we will find what we need. What infuriates me most though is that the most outspoken biggoted "Christians" I know are all Baptists. And we all know the Baptists rule the south. Drives me nuts. When I was a kid we moved to the suburbs and everyone I went to school with was a Baptist. They all acted like I had horns growing out of my head because I wasn't. Now my kids face the same crap. I'd move to a different part of the country if we could afford it, but we can't.
