If it can be proven that America actually gave the popular vote to Bush in this election, I will voluntarily redirect my disdain from the manipulators in the republican party and point it directly at the whole of the American people. However, at this point, all signs point to this election being tainted with fraud, leading to millions of American votes going uncounted or outright stolen from Kerry and handed to Bush.
- DUers Writing Their own Eulogies:
I'm ashamed to see such behaviour.
Over the past day, I've seen people collapse emotionally, questioning all they believe in; questioning the American people; questioning the veracity of the youth vote; questioning themselves as to how they could have been so wrong in believing the exit-polling numbers - yet they do not question the suspect manner in which this election played out. They do not question why certain networks jumped on the opportunity to give Ohio to Bush, leaving Nevada "too close to call", while other networks did exactly the opposite, making Nevada red and Ohio white. If there was certainty in Nevada, why was it not posted immediately on all networks? How can we believe that two stations can simultaneously have two different scenarios in which, if they both showed Nevada for Bush, one would have to declare Bush the victor immediately? If that inconsistency follows, then does it not follow that the networks were actively manipulating information about the election in order to boost ratings? Where's the outrage?
- Reality is Not Created in a Boardroom
You Know it and I Know It - and so do Millions of Others.
This was scripted as a cliffhanger from start to finish, and if you believe that any of what you saw flashing on your TV screen was an accurate mirror of reality, then you'd probably be better suited for a life cheering on professional wrestlers.
The reality is that the democratic process has, once again, simply gone through the motions, and it has been exposed for the sham that it is: corporate entities coming together and attempting to convincingly simulate what it would actually be like if there were fair elections in America. We either need to change things fundamentally, or get used to it.
Americans have spent the past four years watching the truth unravel in films like Outfoxed, Fahrenheit 9/11, Bush's Brain, and Unprecedented, and it would be foolish for us to assume that we have learned absolutely nothing from it. Do we actually believe that a big fundamentalist Christian turnout somehow countermanded a pervasive cultural swell to the left?
- You Know the Media are Complicit
What about the discussions about the corporate media? The simple fact that GE profits from war while simultaneously owning multiple major media outlets should give evidence as to who the media wanted to win. Call it a conspiracy if you want, but I tend to believe that Americans did not spend four painful years waking up, only to be put back to sleep again.
Apparently all of the rational thinking, research and analysis that was going on here at DU over the years is now out the window, and we're ready to found our blame for Bush's ignominious "victory" on the media lies that we've (you've) spent years and years rebutting.
- Even your Grandma saw this Coming
The Diebold fix was something that every alert American could smell coming from miles away; potential election theft was becoming an issue no longer only discussed in tight partisan circles.
As of November 3rd, we may still be hapless within this whirlwind of immediate negativity surrounding the election, but the fact remains clear: the predicted outcomes were way off, and the final count does not realistically reflect America's growing disgust with Bush's policies. Kerry doesn't just get endorsements from usually-conservative magazines and newspapers (American Conservative) by having a pretty face.
I have a feeling that people are working very hard behind the scenes to ensure that our democracy does not wither in the hands of the corporate republican elite for another four years.
They haven't given up, and neither should you - regardless of the stomach-knots we're all experiencing at this time. Kerry has conceded, Bush has a "mandate" - all of this is superficially true, but the greater truth of this debacle has yet to be exposed.
- Every Tear you Shed Will be Mocked by Your Adversaries
It is exceedingly easy to succumb to emotional breakdown; to lie in a pool of sick and ask an unjust God, "Why? Why?" But doing so would be an admission of honest defeat.
We were not defeated in an honest manner.
This is not a call for civil disobedience - it is a call first for stoic, rational understanding of matters. Where do we stand now? Are we being goaded into another Civil War?
We only have a small window of opportunity to act before Bush starts ruling this country with the iron fist he's been giving us glimpses of for four years now. We are going to see either the grip of totalitarianism utterly crushing dissent, or a really revolutionary fireworks display over the next couple of months. Democracy is not, and cannot remain, an "invitation only" event, despite what Bush may have led you to believe.
- Where's Your Integrity?
All of this talk about "I'm moving to Canada" is disheartening.
Are you leaving because it's in your best interest? Has this sham of an election really made people as selfish and unprincipled as the republican party?
Either you have principles or you don't; either you believe in change or you don't. If you do, then you must be willing to endure this nightmare in order to facilitate that change for the good of the American people. If you do not, then you were probably posing as a progressive as some sort of recreation to begin with; using this forum as a passive outlet for your "I'd like to do something good for the country, but I'm just too busy managing my stocks, so I'll just post my exasperation on DU" mentality.
There are liberals, independents, greens, and disappointed conservatives who do not have the luxury of jumping off of this sinking ship, and they need all of the emotional support they can get.
