Why did Daschle lose?
I heard that Daschle had bought a home in another state and called it his primary residence for tax purposes. That would do it for me, if he were running for Senator from my state. Was that it? If not, what the main reason?

16. Call For New Leadersahip...........
Nancy Pelosi needs to go, too!

The Dems need to clean their leadership house.

And that includes Terry McCauliff (sp?)!

3. Daschle should have been gone long ago
He's not the reason why we regained the senate in 2001; Jim Jeffords was. When Republicans of conscience are the only ones supporting our Democratic leadership, we seriously need to start rethinking our political strategy.

5. not it.
for SD Daschle was a good Senator. He spent a lot of time in the state visiting every county each year and was a strong supporter of native american rights.

as a US Senator and Majority leader I have to say he was not enough of an opposition. Too nice maybe? Just not tough enough of a personality? He played it too much republican-light and why have a light repub when you can have the real dirty venomous thing?

10. Hurts to say it, but deep down I always thought that he deserved to lose
He's not a bad person, and I'm sure he was good for South Dakota. But, when I watched Senate votes on CSPAN I often felt that he betrayed us as leader. There is a time to cut your losses and compromise, but there is also a time to fight and stick up for what is right, and again and again he failed to do the latter.

14. Totally...
Daschle went meely-mouth after 9/11, started giving in to everything BUsh Inc. wanted, didn't fight---did not fight.

Hell, he knew he'd have a tough re-election, so why not go out a blaze like Viking Warrior, instead of Repub-Lite, playing it safe, and losing?!

That's what Daschle did, and he's yesterday's news.

18. well, don't get me wrong, on a human level I feel kinda bad for the guy
He's not evil by any means, and he was surely preferable to Thune. Minority leadership aside, I think he was sincerely trying to serve his state, and it has to hurt to be rejected after those years of work. Maybe that's just my liberal bleedin heart poking through, but I'm still not going to rejoice losing that seat to a Republican anytime soon.

11. If you're going to run like a Republican, why say you're a Democrat...
why would the people of South Dakota vote for a guy who runs like a Republican and says he's a Democrat when you can vote for a guy who runs like Republican and says he's a Republican.

13. I don't feel sorry for Daschle..
Like some of the others here, I think we are better as a party without him. His spinless vascillating helped to put us where we are today: in the minority.

Now, maybe we can get a minority leader with a spine. Someone who can actually articulate the Democratic message instead of trying to be Bush's amen corner.

15. Home in South Dakota, home in D.C.
Owns a home in Aberdeen and in Washington D.C.

He took his tax deduction in South Dakota.

His wife took it in D.C.

Again, people, we have to do the homework to find out facts. The media won't, and will never, do it for us.
