WE WERE BORN GAY. IF YOU AGREE, PLEASE VOTE KERRY/EDWARDS.
Hand-painted sign along Route 32 in Mansfield, CT. I saw it this afternoon on my way to the October Surprise Film Festival.

2. So...we were ALL born gay?
Or are they referring to somebody in particular.

'Cause I'm pretty sure I wasn't born gay. I don't remember that far back, but none of my baby pictures have anything which would suggest I was gay. Although...I DID like The Music Man... and Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was a musical too, wasn't it...

Hm.

6. Leave it to overly-analytical DUers to take a perfectly simple message...

...and complicate the fuck out of it! Sometimes I wonder why I even post at all.

7. This is a fascinating thing to think about for me... I don't think....
...its either/or.

I think there is certainly an element of natural/genetic/biological predisposition or something-or-other that is there, but I also think that our context and social experiences and individual freedom and choices are also a factor - individual freedom and choices I think is a variable - sometimes I think some people in some contexts exert more free choice in this area than others. I don't think it ever boils down to choice alone, so please don't misinterpret. My whole point is that I think it is a combination of both natural and contextual things.

What I really think is that every human being is born bi-sexual, and that in very generalized terms, factors in our development push us in different directions. Whether we are born completely neutral or if some are born with a stronger disposition one way or another, I don't know - but I have feeling it is more likely to be the latter (but, I really don't know how to tell -- maybe we are really born neutrally bi-sexual with not "natural" or genetic predisposition to either sex, and then pushed one way or another by our experiences. I have no idea.)

Anyway - I like the sentiment of the sign. :)

10. I can point back to some clear factors that influenced me
There were several different points in life that had a great impact on my identity, including and especially sexuality.

And as I said, I don't believe sexuality is "merely" a "choice" - but neither to I believe it is exclusively genetic. I believe sexuality is just like the rest of our person - where some of who we are is fixed from the beginning and some of who we are we carve out for ourselves both with individual will and through social and relational/contextual influences. That just seems pretty obvious.
