Bigotry in Oklahoma
I just saw the local news (Tulsa) and saw a piece about a gay man whose partner of 23 years passed away 4 years ago. They owned a multi-acre farm together, but because they didn't have THREE signatures on their will, a third-cousin of the deceased showed up after 35 years to claim the land and kick the partner off! A local judge ruled in favor of the 35-year absent 3rd cousin. The case is going to the Supreme Court, if they accept it. This pisses me off for three reasons: one that it is happening; two, I can't find anything about it on the internets; and three, that this something the religious right thinks is a good thing! Oklahoma is one of the 14 states with an anti-gay (save marriage) initiative on the ballot. How can these people live with themselves? They think kicking a 60 year old man (maybe older) off the land he has owned for years is fair?! I hate this place!

1. Note my handle...

I moved away 18 yrs ago mostly because of the hypocrisy and bigotry. There are some great people in Oklahoma but the way the fundamentalists run the state is sickening.

2. Me Too!
And I have a crazy theory about the place. Basically I figure that a place that boasts of a heritage of being greedy cheaters and thieves - which is what the original Oklahoma land rush sooners (not the football team) were - has some really bad karma going on. What goes around comes around. What you reap you sow. All that sort of stuff. I just figure nothing good can come from it. And that is before I look at the attitudes and policies here. Admittedly, there is nothing rational about this opinion - it simply reflects my displeasure and disdain for so much of what I have seen and experienced here.

I'm looking for work in some more enlightened and progressive place. I want to moon the Tulsa city limit sign on my final exit.

4. Same thing nearly happened to my gay cousin in San Antonio.
However, he and his lover had years ago gone to a lawyer and had air-tight documents drawn up. His lover's family in Nebraska who had long ago disowned him tried to break the will to no avail. Gay couples need to make sure they get some good lawyering.

6. Good lawyering doesn't always work
Sometimes having a good lawyer isn't the answer, especially when the laws work against you.

On November 2nd the "great state of Oklahoma" places on the ballot State Question No. 711

This measure adds a new section of law to the Constitution. It adds Section 35 to Article 2. It defines marriage to be between one man and one woman. It prohibits giving the benefits of marriage to people who are not married. It provides that same sex marriages in other states are not valid in this state. It makes issuing a marriage license in violation of this section a misdemeanor.
