Harry Shearer can kiss my ass!
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 12:20 PM by The Night Owl
What the hell is Harry Shearer's problem? The election is close as hell and what does he do? He releases an embarrassing video of Edwards spending a lot of time combing his hair and checking his face before some TV appearance. Why release that before the election?

We all know what the media did to Howard Dean for being too exhuberant at a campaign rally. Imagine what the media will do with the video of Edwards acting prissy.

94. Yes, the problem is the media
Yes, the main problem is the media, but Shearer knows that. Shearer knows what the media can do to candidates who are caught looking silly, so why does he release video of Edwards looking silly? Because he wants to torpedo Kerry/Edwards.

Dukakis. Hello?

Dan Quayle. Hello?

Howard Dean. Hello?

Am I getting through here?

And for the record, no one is stopping Shearer from putting his "art" out there. That does not mean that I have to applaud him for making my guy look silly.

71. No. If Harry was a repub making fun of Bush,
the freeps would be advocating violence against him. That's the FR "mindset". I'm just being realistic. Making fun of our candidates right before an election hurts our candidates. If you want them to lose, then fine. I'm merely saying Harry Shearer is an idiot IF he wants Kerry to win. I want Kerry to win, and it's clearly unwise to do anything that helps the other side. If you can't deal with even that elementary level of partisanship, than I suggest you are a tad too sensitive for DU.

I'm not the thought police. I have no control over what anyone says, nor do I desire such control. But it's a simple fact, two weeks before the election: anything and everything can and will be used against our candidates, and Harry Shearer just handed the other side ammunition.

Why don't you go stand on the sidewalk with a sign that reads, "Kerry for President...or Bush. Whoever." Narrow mindset my ass.

No, Harry Shearer created an art exhibit in which he made fun of pols before they went on camera and Edwards was one Dem amongst mostly RWers.

He's a poltical satirist for crissakes who according to those who listen to his show rips Bush a new one all the time.

And I would rather be called a fence sitter than some rabid partisan who screams about insulting "dear leader".

The Bush administration is constantly looking for ammunition to make Kerry/Edwards look weak when the nation is at war. Shearer just gave Bush/Cheney more ammunition.

Don't get me wrong- There is no substance to the video of Edwards looking prissy, but since when has substance ever mattered to the media?

13. Never have understood what anyone sees in Shearer
For years this guy has had numerous movie and TV roles (including a stint on Saturday Night Live), a pathetic radio show, and a weekly column in the L.A. Times in which he never has anything to say. He is also, amazingly, one of the half dozen people on Earth privileged enough to be granted a viewing of the Jerry Lewis film "The Day the Clown Cried". Not even Dean Martin got to do that.

Not once in more than 20 years have I have ever laughed at ANYTHING Shearer has ever said or done, with the possible exception of a few lines spoken on the Simpsons, which were all written by people other than Shearer. He is more Pauly-Shore-like than Pauly Shore. He makes Nipsey Russell look like the funniest man who ever lived.

Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 12:49 PM by hiphopnation23
but I can't accept your premise that just because the lines on the Simpson's are written by other folks that his vocal talent doesn't make the lines even more brilliant. The total is more than just the sum of its parts. He plays upwards of 15 characters on the Simpsons, each one as hilariously executed as the last, IMHO. Lovejoy, Skinner and many more. The words sitting on a page wouldn't do much more than make you chuckle.

What about Spinal Tap? He lent his talent to the brilliance of that film just like the other two did. Most of it was improv! Simply hilarious. I haven't read his column and only heard his radio show a few times, but I remember liking it.

On edit: We wouldn't even know the meaning of the term "Eeeexcellent" if it weren't for Shearer. And because of that, this picture would not be funny:

A few lines of the Simpsons? Christ he does 1/3 of the characters?

He also wrote for SNL during its initial heyday.

Look I'm not saying he's the funniest guy. I enjoy him but there are certainly people I find funnier and more enjoyable. But it seems to me that his score on the hilarity meter depends more on his politics than his actual humor for too many people here.

92. musical/cultureal taste is sooooo subjective, its pointless to argue.
for example, i agree that shearer has never made me laugh out loud, even on the old SNL he was competent but no more. Nothing against the guy, but he didn't stand out (of course, with that lineup, it would be hard for anyone, but I digress)

And, I liked escape from new york. I hate Barry Manilow's music. I don't like most rap but I like Outkast, I hate reality shows but I like sitcoms...yadda yadda yadda.....
its all personal preference....the kind of music you like or what ever does not reflect on your worth as a person or your ability to make a cogent point.

unless, of course, you think Pauli Shore is funny. then, I'll have to give you SUCH a pinch!

I find Shearer hilarious, talented (I seriously doubt he's not involved in Simpson's script chnages, and you do all those voices), and I find his show (a show more about media than anything else) extremely satirical and humorous. I also enjoy his taste in music for the show...a very eclectic collection.

...it's still just a guy combing his hair. I still don't see anything the least bit extraordinary about it. Is there something I'm missing in this that gives us some deep glimpse into Edwards' soul?

Did Harry Shearer himself "expose" this video -- where did it come from?

53. The video is from a satellite wild feed. Here's a 1999 article from salon
that explains much more:
http://archive.salon.com/tech/feature/1999/07/29/wild_feeds/

"I did not wash my hair last night because I felt a certain amount of stiffness was probably healthy," Dan Rather says to a producer as he prepares to go on air with a report from Soweto, South Africa. "What do you think? OK, OK, the question is whether or not to wash it for tomorrow, but we'll make that decision as we go along, I guess."

Such are the weighty choices our news anchors are forced to make from day to day. Rather likely did not expect to be discussing his coiffure on public view, but he is. This peek behind the curtain of the TV news business is known as a "wild feed" -- one of the unscripted, random moments found in the raw satellite transmissions used by TV networks and affiliates to send live sound and video from one location to another. The feeds are sometimes scrambled by the networks. But often they aren't, and they can be intercepted by anyone with a satellite dish who knows where to point it. Wild feeds reveal some of the embarrassingly creaky machinery beneath the high-gloss Oz of broadcast television -- and these days they can be found online.

Because Shearer, as I've stated repeatedly, is a pseudocomic, who absolutely must own pictures of a powerful Hollywood agent molesting some kind of farm animal. Nothing else could possibly explain his success in "the business".

47. Perhaps then an art gallery wouldn't be the best place for it?
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 01:06 PM by NYCGirl
From the slate article:

He has a particular fascination with silent feeds, and since 1988, he's worked in that medium on HBO, at Los Angeles' Museum of Contemporary Art, and even in the window of Barney's New York. "The whole project," he told me at the opening of "Face Time," "is called 'Non-Talking Heads.' "

Why is the silence so disconcerting? Perhaps because it underscores that these non-talking heads are stuck in a no-man's land that's neither public nor private. Each has his own strategy for negotiating this TV purgatory. Larry King, peering at a monitor off-screen as he waits to go live at Ronald Reagan's funeral, chews popcorn with open-mouthed abandon. He looks like your Great-Uncle Ira pigging out on the Early Bird Special. Peter Jennings, sitting in the ABC newsroom, takes notes and strokes his mouth, not inelegantly. Bill Kristol smiles, and smiles, and smiles, and, finally, gives up. Judy Woodruff, standing outside Boston's FleetCenter during the Democratic convention, knits her brow worriedly. Henry Kissinger looks bored. Newt Gingrich looks tired and eventually closes his eyes. (Is he asleep?) Ralph Nader endures the application of hair spray; God knows what toxic chemicals are contained therein, but it's a small price to pay to change the world. John McCain looks expectant, light shining in his eyes. I'm going to be on television! Paul Begala scowls.

In the raw feeds, the non-talking heads seem both more and less human than they are on "real" television. More human, obviously, in the sense that each has developed an idiosyncratic style of waiting his or her turn. But also less human because every facial expression is placed inside the frame of a TV screen, which in turn is placed inside the larger frame of the work as a whole. These aren't people; they've been cruelly objectified into absurdist art. Sad to say, they are much more compelling in silent repose than they'll ever be once they finally get to speak about the Iraq war, or the budget deficit, or the latest political polls. We'll stop staring as we listen to what they say. But we won't listen very hard.

62. Harry Shearer makes **$5.5 million/year** on his "Simpsons" work alone!
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 01:22 PM by rezmutt
This is up from the "paltry" $2.2 million he was making before this year's renegotiation.

I don't begrudge him this {although it's pretty far from hard-earned, and his easy efforts hardly contribute much to the betterment of society}, but Shearer {literally} cashed in his "outsider" status long ago.

As a multi-multi millionaire, he now enjoys the fat-cat tax breaks that the * administration affords him.

Shearer, by contrast, takes no public stand, nor does he put out any discernable efforts to effect a change the horrible direction that his country is headed in.

Shearer is playing it very safe. Of course he is entitled to make all the $$$$$ he wants.

But he used to pose as an outsider in his Credibility Gap days in the 1960s. And now, it appears that he's quite comfortable with things just the way they are. He used to speak out; now, he takes questionable pot-shots {which make terrific fodder for the right wing, by the way) at those who profess to be interested in change.

I do begrudge Shearer that.

The silence makes it even more so. You aren't supposed to be watching, it's like being on the other side of a bathroom mirror. It's like a window into someone else's vanity. Watching Edwards fight with that one lock of hair made me laugh because I do the same damn thing myself every day. It humanizes the subject while at the same time giving the viewer a sense of watching something that they're not supposed to see.

78. Your critique of his art can kiss my ass!
Why release this before an election? It's fucking art about the election, that's why! It's showing in an art gallery, not on Fox News! If you didn't bother to actually read the article that accompanied the Edwards clip, his other subjects were overwhelmingly conservative, including Newt Gingrich, Henry Kissinger, Larry King, Dick Cheney, among others. I don't they'll be rushing to showcase this clip of Edwards, if they do, there are plenty of clips out there that make them look as ridiculous.

If you had bothered to check Shearere's website, you might have found his video "It's the Stupidity, Stupid", which got him banned from Fox News. It's about how a small amount of people hated the Clintons so much that they made us all have to listen to it for eight years (and how Clinton inadvertantly helped them).

He's a comic and social satirist. He has no obligation to follow your agenda. Edwards wasn't doing anything that any of the other candidates haven't done (those with hair, anyway), so just try to worry about the shit coming from Bush and Cheney and maybe leave the artists alone? Silencing dissenting opinions is not what our side's supposed to be about, after all.

Yes, I am okay with Shearer's work being shown. Does that mean I have to like it? No.

Shearer is trying to embarrass Edwards. Why he would do that right before the election is anyone's guess, but my guess is that he wants Bush to win.

Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 05:15 PM by Susang
You completely misinterpreted the intent of the project. Edwards (as well as the other subjects) was fully aware he was on camera. All of the people are. If you had read the article, you would have known this. That's why they're silent in the clips, they've learned from other's past pre-show gaffes.

If you think he wants Bush to win, why do you suppose he showed Kissinger, Gingrich and Cheney during their live feeds? Oh right, he must hate Democrats. :eyes:

on edit: Try reading this to see how he really feels about Republicans and Democrats. Then you'll at least know something about his opinions before you judge him. http://www.lacitybeat.com/article.php?id=568&IssueNum=32

115. A fricking MEN to that
I listen to LeShow just about every week and he is VICIOUSLY antiBush

He almost NEVER even mentions Kerry

you can check harryshearer.com and go to LeShow....check ANY archived show and see for yourself

I'm very sad to see this brouhaha over the Edwards thing, and agree that the timing is not good, to say the least

but rest assured that Shearer is no friend of the fascists.

if you can find it headed in any of the show listings, check out Dick Cheney's Underground Diary: "he's just a heartbeat away....from history."

he's very biting, but it's tempered with great subtlety; dryness along the lines of Spinal Tap

116. It's actually not well known generally,
but Harry Shearer has had a vendetta against Kurt Russell for years. It's gone so far as Shearer sneaking into houses of Russell fans and pissing in their cheerios in the morning. Pretty crazy, but it explains a lot.

No one is quite sure what started the vendetta, but it may have something to do with someone getting fucked because they can't take a joke.

118. Tell him to go back to playing Monty Burns. He can't say anything else
correctly.

Shearer is as much of a repuke as Burns is.

129. I read the whole thread and it's all hilarious
Look - folks are getting all worked up over a relatively unknown comedian playing a clip of Edwards on a website, right? doesn't that strike anyone as just slightly ridiculous? I mean, does anyone seriously think that some undecided voter will somehow be reading Shearer's website, come across that clip and think to themselves "My God! I can't bear to have a vice-president who comes his hair that way! Cheney certainly wouldn't do that!" and then goes and votes for Bush?

Plus, the vehemence of some folks against Shearer is in my OPINION, flatly ridiculous and thus open to ribbing.

"Shearer is as much of a repuke as Burns is" is a prime example of
that. I mean, how many folks here were critical of Edwards during the primary if they were supporting someone else? Are they suddenly as much repukes as Burns?

Also, "fuck 'em if they can't take a joke" should be instruction no. 1 for how to view folks posting on the internet, and I certainly think that applies to me. I've been burned before on taking folks seriously when they weren't, so I usually think carefully about whether or not a person is being serious before extending my head crest in a purple display of outrage. I generally save that for folks like the Ohio Sec. of State, that bastard, why i oughta-
(puffs head crest dramatically)
