Dem. Presidential hopefuls & the Clintons:" California Here I Come!"
Willie Brown, San Francisco's charismatic mayor, suggested this on Chris Matthews last night: Let's bring all nine (ten?) Democratic presidential hopefuls, along with Bill & Hillary Clinton, to CA for an old fashioned whistle stop tour of the state during the last week of the recall campaign.

Imagine how such a tour would suck the oxygen out of the air for Auhnold's last week media blitz. And there's no way the Republicans can counter the move, since Bush* is about as appealing as a turd in the punch bowl in Caifornia.

It's a great win- win proposition for the candidates and the Davis/ Bustamonte campaign, right?

Or not?

1. I think it is a great idea
why these campaigns don't do something innovative like this is beyond me. It would show Democratic unity.

2. What a great idea!
I wish I had thought of it. :eyes: I seem to remember submitting several posts and at least one thread (which died a quick death -- a fine tradition) suggesting this -- and urged supporters of all political candidates to write/call/e-mail their candidate urging them to come out to California before October 7 and speak out agains the recall.

I contacted the Dean campaign and, after leaving 2 messages, FINALLY spoke with a person who informed me that the "governor had not taken a position on the California re-call." I was VERY disappointed. This is a critical mistake coming from the Dean campaign.

I sincerely hope that everyone understands the national impact this recall will have -- on so many levels. We've already seen "recall fever" start up in other states. If we successfully defeat this it will take the wind out of the sails of "recall fever."

If the Repukes are successful in taking over California in a coup, it will, theoretically at least, give them a stronger foothold in California with its 55 electoral college votes -- critical in the 2004 Presidential election.

The California Democratic Party is doing all it can to fight this (better late than never), but we need ALL DEMOCRATS in this state walking precincts, operating phone trees, whatever they can do to help.

NO on the Recall
YES on Bustamonte
NO on Prop. 53
NO on Prop. 54

3. It's got to be "One- for- all- and- all- for -one" to work
If someone resolves to stay in Iowa that weekend to campaign, it may break the facade.
Query whether the campaigns can work together on this?

4. I queried DU members on this a few weeks back
asking them if they'd call their respective candidate headquarters and urge the candidates to come to CA before Oct. 7. The thread stayed up approximately 3.4 minutes. I'm infamous for posting short-lived threads -- it's a gift. ;-)

6. but IF schwartzentool

7. If Ahnold gets in . . .
I'm not asserting it will be an automatic win for the Republicans in 2004; however, theoretically at least, it will give them a boost.

If Ahnold gets in, he still has a Democratic State Legislature to deal with, as well as a Dem. cabinet so there will basically be absolute gridlock for 3 years. So, to answer your question regarding his chances of making things better for California -- 0. He can, however, make it worse or at least more difficult by refusing to sign Dem.-based legislation.

5. From what I hear some of the campaigns have sent workers to Ca.
to help fight the recall. I know that Davis asked for Chris Lehane to help him over a month ago and Kerry added a few others. I do think that the recall will be defeated. I really do.

9. until
all democrats see just how much this recall attempt is an assault on democracy, and that we will have a repeat of florida 2000 in california if karl rove has his way, then nothing will get done... i still can't believe how much folks seemingly don't give a shit about what's going on in california, the attempted coup...

i think your post is a great idea, and it would work... but first, each and everyone of the presidential candidates must realize that no matter how hard they campaign, it won't matter two shits if the gop gets a governor in california... if this happens, we WILL lose the 2004 election, and karl rove knows it.

i hope the democrats CARPET BOMB california in the weeks leading up to the recall vote, and i hope it will send the message to rove machine in washington: FUCK YOU, don't FUCK with us, and we're gonna FIGHT for democracy and our country and we're gonna WIN!

10. Won't work.. It's SHARK month

Every day this week we have had "shark stuff" on tv.. The sharks arrived late this year, but they will still be in play during this month..

I cannot see the networks giving much time to the candidates if they DID come out here..

Some of them might not "want" to associate themselves with the recall, for fear of being "labeled"..

Clinton coming out would be helpful, but I don't think that the rest of them would help that much..

I just want the whole thing OVER.. I really hope that people get smart and send this thing down the dumper.. If Davis IS recalled, it will be a dangerous precedent for EVERYONE..

Why even have elections, if they can be undone at any time by someone with money and a grudge?? Who's to say that candidates will not start setting campaign mooney "aside" for the recall if they lose??:(

11. I disagree
vacations are over...school is starting...sharks aren't important anymore.

BUT the recall will have endless legs until after the
results.
A BIG DEM LOVEFEST staged as a big outdoor picnic and
concert (get a great band or two!) is a good idea and will get press coverage...specially held in a beautiful site, ocean in the
background, blue skies, sloping mountains...images of why we love California and why it's important that Rove Inc. doesn't hijack it.

12. Great idea - suggest this to the DNC and CA Democratic Party
immediately. It would be great to see this type of an event and it would show unity in the Party!
