5. This is been mentioned at DU several times - but more is better!

Glad to read that the insanity going on in Ohio is caught in the very first sentance of this article:

The head of a company vying to sell voting machines in Ohio told Republicans in a recent fund-raising letter that he is "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year."

Calling all Ohio DUers:

Who's in charge of election system decisions in your state? You EACH need to call him/her, express your outrage AND state that you want to see PAPER BALLOTS in your state. HAVA requirements for the blind can be met with machines that have a keyboard and a printer to print a completed ballot.

Dorks can use a touch-screen machine which prints a completed ballot.
Non-dorks who know how to operate a pencil or pen fill in a ballot the old-fashioned way.

All the paper ballots are then optically scanned OR manually counted.

If anybody is advocating something more complicated than that they

a) are getting kickbacks/campaign contributions from one or more election machine manufacturers,
b) plan on trying to steal votes for themselves and/or others,
c) prefer dictatorships over democracies, and/or
d) don't understand HAVA

9. Holy shit! I've heard all about the security problems with Diebold
but "Mr. Diebold" himself kisses the hem of Emperor Bonzo's robe as well?

The company flak had this to say...

Diebold spokeswoman Michelle Griggy said O'Dell - who was unavailable to comment personally - has held fund-raisers in his home for many causes, including the Columbus Zoo, Opera Columbus, Catholic Social Services and Ohio State University.

Sure lady, but neither the zoo nor the freakin' opera ever started a war or hijacked an economy, last time I checked.

We're doomed. There is no way they will ever let anything but a fascist agenda reign in this nation.

The United States is now officially a dictatorship.

17. First Halliburton and now this
Why is it that our selected "leadership" has gotten away with more conflict of interest than anyone else in history?

Halliburton made a ton of money in Iraq already. More money for Dick Cheney. gee what a surprise.

And now this. I'm utterly disgusted.

Why are they getting away with this?

19. Email your SoS with this!
I got the idea from Patriot Spear in LBN. I emailed the link to this article along with an excerpt in my message. It is outrageous and we need to let our Secretary of States know it! Here is a link to Proud Patriot's thread in Activism with EVERY link you will need to get this message out in your state...

20. Yes, each DUer should call the SOS in their state.
Or their director of elections. Try to find out what their plan is first. Some states have already rejected electronic voting. But if they are considering it, be sure to make clear that Diebold should be removed from consideration as a vendor for voting machines. And that you are OUTRAGED, DO YOU HEAR ME, OUTRAGED, that the PRESIDENT OF DIEBOLD HAS SAID THAT HE IS "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year." That our COUNTRY IS SUPPOSED TO BE A DEMOCRACY, AND FOR THE PRESIDENT OF DIEBOLD TO STATE HIS STRONG PARTISAN LEANINGS IS JUST UNACCEPTABLE! And that this evidence of his motive to commit fraud (he already has the means) taints all electronic voting machine manufacturers.

And you should also mention the utility of simple paper ballots:

paper ballots + locked ballot boxes + multiple sets of eyes + basic accounting = honest elections

Specialized machines can be used to assist the blind in the generation of a completed paper ballot, thereby satisfying HAVA.

Optical scan machines can be used to reduce the time needed to count votes.

22. You CAN get a repub SOS to listen
Edited on Sat Aug-30-03 10:16 AM by gristy
And besides, what's the fun of working on a dem SOS? Like preaching to the choir! Well, all joking aside, even dem SOS's need to be carefully monitored, but the challenge is diminished. I have established a decent dialog with the MN SOS, Mary Kiffmeyer (R). Also got the Star Tribune interested, and they published an article in June.
