Halloween "a day for the good Lord, not for the devil"

Across the Bible Belt this Halloween, some little ghosts and goblins might get shooed away by the neighbors - and some youngsters will not be allowed to go trick-or-treating at all - because the holiday falls on a Sunday this year.

"It's a day for the good Lord, not for the devil," said Barbara Braswell, who plans to send her 4-year-old granddaughter Maliyah out trick-or-treating in a princess costume on Saturday instead.

Some towns around the country are decreeing that Halloween be celebrated on Saturday to avoid complaints from those who might be offended by the sight of demons and witches ringing their doorbell on the Sabbath. Others insist the holiday should be celebrated on Oct. 31 no matter what.

"You just don't do it on Sunday," said Sandra Hulsey of Greenville, Ga. "That's Christ's day. You go to church on Sunday, you don't go out and celebrate the devil. That'll confuse a child."

3. I'm Glad It'll Be Observed on Saturday in My Town
but it's not based on religious beliefs...come to think of it, maybe it is! I'm positively religious in the defense of my leisure time on Sundays. I'd rather get it out of the way on Saturday. B-)

4. It was a religious holiday to begin with known as all souls
day, and all hallows' eve, which preceded all saints day, a religious holy day. Of course, like most Christian holy days, there was a pagan one under it that the Church overlaid with a Christian one. This way the converts could still celebrate their festivals and still be Christians. Kind of convenient I guess. Too bad no one explains to the fundies what Christianity is really about.

16. Well, these idiot fundies here in the South don't know any better.
I live in Georgia and am surrounded by these morons. I won't be surprised if the trick or treaters show up on Saturday night.

...and I don't give a rat's ass how or whether they want to celebrate it, as long as I can observe it how I wish.

8. What I never get is: pagans = devil worshippers
Don't they, by definition, NOT believe in the devil?

By the same standard, anyone who isn't a christian would be a devil worshipper. Oh...wait...

11. Worse than that -- they STOLE the devil!
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 05:57 PM by htuttle
The image of the devil as a cloven hooved, horned creature was decided upon during the Middle Ages, during the period the Church was concerned with supplanting the indigenious paganism in Northern Europe.

Not coincidentally, they decided that Satan looked exactly like the 'Horned God' or Consort of the Goddess in various strains of paganism throughout Europe.

They added the tail and wings later for good measure.

14. Ah, but you missed a key fact.
You have forgotten to take into account what christians believe in.

If there is only one true God, and there is an evil former angel who is responsible for all of the evil, than, anyone worshipping anything other than your god is in fact worshipping the devil. Even if they believe they are not, they are just being fooled by that damn devil.

If you are a believer in that particular strain of christian theology, believing that pagans worships satan is entirely consistant.

9. F*CKING Ridiculous...
If these idiotic jesus freaks knew how to read, they may be suprised to learn that originally Saturday was heralded as "the Lord's Day", not Sunday.

Pagans used Sunday to celebrate their idea of God, which was "The Sun". And thus we get "SUNday". Fucking zealots scare the shit of me....maybe we need to bomb the "bible belt" in order to make the world a safer place.

10. You also can't do it on Thursday. It's disrespectful to Thor.
And honestly, if I have to choose between pissing off Jesus and pissing off Thor, I'll piss off Jesus. He's way more laid back.

13. I thought this was gonna be about Hell Houses and X-tians
(not to be confused with Christians) passing out Chick tracts.

Did you know that the Vatican, after creating Islam, Zionism, Communism, and Nazism to kill off the Jews, sent the wicked Irish Beatles to bring Satanic beat to the U.S. through rock 'n' roll? And this led to Hippies which would ignite a revolution for Castro and the USSR and the ChiComs which are the Kings of the East which will fight Israel at Armageddon. Unless it's Saddam Hussein or the A-rabs. It's true!
And they're behind Halloween. And the Druids. And Satan.

21. The kids in my UCC church will go to church
and after church they will go home, dress up in some of the goriest costumes you have ever seen and return to church for an old fashioned Halloween party. There will be gruesome noises, yucky looking treats and spooky stories. A good time will be had by all; and Jesus will smile because he understands that his children love him enough to trust him to oversee their fun.
