I am 36... this is what I remember...and thats why I am a Democrat.

I was born in '68 so I was not here when former Neo-Cons has President Kennedy assasinated. I do remember Watergate mostly because it interupted Batman everyday. I do remember Gerald Ford pardoning Nixon, did not understand the implications of it then but remember my Daddy raising hell about it. I remember Jimmy Carter. I remember that he was fought against by what we now call Neo-Cons the whole time he was in office. I remember them saying how he gave the Panama Canal away as if it was ever ours to give.

I remember standing in the unemployment lines with my Daddy when I was out for the summer during the recession. I remember going to work with him at a local Cabinet makers shop when he could not find work anywhere else. I remember having to go to vacation bible school with the cabinet makers son even though I did not want to because thats where us kids went while our fathers worked. In the deep south that is what the faithful do with their children during the summer months. The cabinet maker who was a good man but an ignorant one was very Southern religous as my father is not. I know that he did not want to subject me to that but he did what he had to to put food on the table. I know that my Father is one of the best and hardest working men in the world. I know that he is honest and cares more for his fellow man than anyone I know. I can remember him telling me at a dentist office when I was about twelve that it was not right to take a magazine from the lobby because other people will have to wait and they need something to read. I remember during that same period that my family had to apply for foodstamps because things had gotten so bad. I remember my Daddy and Mother fighting about it because she did not want to do it. I remember that in my part of south Alabama that if you got foodstamps other peopole looked at you as "sorry" or "lazy" because the Republican party and its biggotry is huge here. I remember having to drive to Mobile, Alabama to get groceries because my Mother was too ashamed to use the foodstamps in our little town.

I remember the Iran/Contra affair. I remember the main players being pardoned by George H. W. Bush and the rest being sentenced to probation when millions of Americans were being jailed for much, much less.

I remember how this nation prospered under the Clinton administration. I remember that he was the most investigated President in the history of this country. I remember that the only thing he was ever found guilty of was receiving a blow-job from a 21 year old girl in the Whitehouse. I remember he lied about it. I remember thinking if I was married to a lawyer I would too. I remember thinking...so fuking what...look at all the good he has done and all the good he has tried to do for this country all the while being attacked by the Money people in this nation.

THATS WHY I AM A DEMOCRAT. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS RUN BY THE RICH AND WILL ALWAYS BE FOR THE RICH AND DOES NOT CARE ONE BIT ABOUT PEOPLE LIKE ME OR MY MEMORIES.

5. I'm 36 also...
I remember being afraid of nuclear war when I was a kid, and of how that fear eased during the Clinton years. I felt safe then, knowing that there were competent leaders in the oval office. Now, even though I live in a small town that's probably nowhere near a terrorist's hit list, I feel more concern and fear than I ever did during the Reagan years. Now I worry about nuclear proliferation, Republican's taking away contraceptive rights, my son (and his peers) growing up to shoulder the huge defecit burden- assuming they survive being drafted to fight the republican's oil/fundamentalist wars.

8. I thought of Forrest Gump
when I read the part about your being from Alabama. What a wonderful movie. The Gump character would probably be about Kerry's age if he were real.

I am a bit older than you. I got to see "Batman" in prime time. You were no doubt watching reruns at that point. But, yeah, I would have been extremely upset had Watergate broken into the "Bat Channel" on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

15. Yeah, Welcome home
The "rich" would love a return to the time when they ruled with an iron fist. The American experiment has taken that "birthright" out of their lives, and they want it back.

Welcome friend.

What a terrific post. I live in NY and grew up around NYC so obviously my childhood was radically different. Your post was a refreshing and insightfully provactive introduction to what someone my age must have gone through growing up in a radically different environment that must have been incredible hostile to your fathers and families world view. You father sounds like a wonderfully unique and courageous individual; your mother too!

Thanks for a terrific post and again welcome to DU!

And a Jet fan to boot!

Jets are my AFC team...Believe it or not I'm really a Cowboys fan! When I was younger and began playing Pee Wee (around 9) they were all the shit (as I'm sure you remember)! Go figure! Much to the chagrin of my dad and brother who are consummate Giants fans!

16. Yeah the Cowboys are great too.

It's funny how you remember things. Did you ever have to take a lunchbox to school. I remember having one that had all the NFL teams helmets on it. I wish I still had it. A lot of those teams are in different cities now. Kenny Stabler who is from my county played for Alabama and then was a great quarterback for the Oakland Raiders is still bid around here...he is an Alabama football announcer.

You are my son's age, so I appreciated hearing your "take". It sounds like your father gave you some very good political foundations!

I think my generation is becoming even more aware of how deeply those assasinations affected us. And your memories of Carter as poignant.

I would remind you of one thing, however. While the RW charges against Clinton were bogus, he was *not* benign. His welfare deform hurt many poor people, and continues to hurt them, especially women and children, the ones who can least absorbg those cuts.

He also hurt working people with NAFTA, etc. What he did was not all rosy. And it has nothing to do with his sex life, or lying.

18. Great post
I am 38, born in 66. I remember a lot of the same things you do. I remember The Iran hostage crisis. I remember going with my dad on even numbered days and waiting in hours long lines to get gas for the car. Through the Regan years I remember my parents always having to tell us kids "no, we can't afford it" to almost EVERYTHING. And the damndest thing about it, my parents voted Republican! My Dad still does. I try and try to open his eyes but to date it has not worked. I'm not sure if my mother even votes. So we have our political debates, and sometimes, they get heated. But we always end then discussion of me telling him, go ahead, vote for Bush cause i'm right behind you to cancel out your vote! lol Then he just scratches his head and wonders how he managed to raise a Democrat!

22. I do that frequently
I also remind him that me, his own daughter, a single parent with kids, who recently lost her good paying job along with mine and the kids health insurance, and 6 months later finally got a job but had to take a $1000.00 per month pay cut and no benefits. Then I ask him to tell me how he can in good conscience vote for the very people who are responsible for making his grandchildren and daughter struggle. He can't come up with a good answer. He has been brainwashed by all the talking heads and RW bullshit. I can't find a way to get through to him. My dad is a wonderful man. He worked hard all his life and he is just great. I for the life of me can't figure out why he can't see the light.

25. It's frustrating I know.

You can't raise your parents though. All you can do is talk respectfully to them and quit if it gets heated. You love them as they love you and going any further is not worth it, you respecting them is much more important than them seeing that they are wrong. Now that just goes for your parents...not everyone else.

or mean with my parents. But.....I do tell them how the cow ate the cabbage in no uncertain terms. No sugar coating it here. They are very aware of how I feel and they respect that. I remind them frequently that THEY are the ones that raised me to be aggressive and relentlessly go after what I want. My dad may not agree with me but he respects me and has often told me how proud of me he is that I am actively and aggressively working for what I believe in. So that is worth something.

20. Also born in '68
I'll never forget or forgive the media for showing the faces of the family members during the Challenger explosion...sitting in the school library and watching it live...it was the first time I ever saw that kind of loss...it made me feel immense grief, but also outrage at the invasion of those people's private anguish.

21. Welcome
I'm 31 and from a little town in the mountains of North Carolina. The Vacation bible school thing hit home for me because I remember it vividly. I recall they served watered down koolaid (literally and figuratively) and the cheapest cookies they could find at the grocery store during the break.

Again, welcome.

32. So true, all you said
They really don't care about anyone but themselves. It's so sad and disheartening to see so many fellow Americans on the "me-me-me-f__k everyone-else" bandwagon.
We had to use food stamps too for a few years when I was young. My REPUBLICAN father skipped out on us and left my mom to raise us alone. She worked hard...8-10 hours a day in a factory but the minimum wage she received would not put enough food on the table. I'll never forget the dirty looks we got standing in the grocery store line. I think once you've been through that, you can never be part of the right-wing. I heard a freeper on another thread say we think the world owes us a living. What crap. My mother worked her ass off every day of her life. The system is stacked against the poor/powerless and they enjoy keeping that way.

have never been poor. Remember when George H. W. Bush was so amazed at the grocery scanner when that had been a part or mine or your lives for years.
