1. Right -- and theire expenses seem reasonable to me

We would all be the poorer if we don't have Cooperative Research around.

Here's their annual budget -- very reasonable:

BUDGET FOR NEXT 12 MONTHS
Server and other website-related expenses.................... $5,000
Research and writing. (Salaries, two-people, full-time + ).. $60,000
Programming. (Salary, full-time, one person)................... $30,000
Administration, volunteer coordination, data integrity.
(Part-time staff)........................................ $20,000
Other - computer repairs, public relations, etc................. $5,000
TOTAL .................................................................. $120,000

Edit: what they're looking for this quarter is $30K

Someone ought to mention this to Mike Malloy and the AAR folks.
