I'm sorry, the Arizona students on Hardball are
a bunch of idiots. Dear God, is THIS the product of the GOTV drive? One girl stated she was pro-life and Tweety proceeded to slam her into the realization that she was actually Pro-Choice, at which point she just basically said, who cares. The crowd boo'd when Tweety asked they thought women should be punished for having an abortion. BUT, he reminded them, if you aren't punishing them, then your aren't making it illegal, so you're basically supporting a pro-choice position...so why are you saying you're pro-life? Well...uh...YAY BUSH! 4-MORE-YEARS!

He scanned the crowd with his mic, and one by one the students cheered their support for W...a few Kerry's thrown in. "I'm for war...ya gotta fight 'em...George Bush will protect American from attackers..." Holy shit, it was sooooooo embarrassing. I hope this was just a Young Republicans Club party run amok, because this is a scary!

I was just a kid in the sixties, so I don't recall first hand, but I'd have to think there were similar republican/pro-war students on campus in the Viet Nam era, so I'm trying to look at it objectively, but...jesus...I suppose AZ is supposed to be Bush country...

1. Tweety should have asked the Bushkins when they
were enlisting and leaving for Iraq.

Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 06:55 PM by tridim
pushed their way to the front and Tweety just went down the line asking who they support. It was pathetic.

One of them said, "I'm for war so I'm for Bush". If that doesn't say it all.

3. Sorry to say that even among the students in the 60's most
were not anti-war despite the mythology. Many were rabibly pro-war but the majority were apathetic and didn't want to get involved. Take it from one who knows about this first hand.

15. They had student deferments and knew they didn't have to go...
What kind of GPA did you have to maintain to keep your student deferment?

30. I had a Joan Baez tape on which David Harris gave a speech
about sending his draft cards back to the feds.

I think that was an incredibly courageous act, unheard of at the time. He was in jail for 4 or 5 years for this.

26. I saw a bit of that and you are correct, these kids were not too
bright. Reminded me of the Jay Leno joke bit where he asks people the SIMPLEST questions, like what's the third planet from the sun and they all are dumbfounded. Or when did World War II start and they'll guess it was 1750.

7. Creepy
Whenever Hardball goes into the crowd and interacts with young Bush supporters is creepy... One lady didn't realize she was pro-choice and some real neanderthal looking bald kid said he was pro-war in general... They seemed confused.

"Cheerleaders for Bush! Yes to war!"

an enlistment form, so he could get signed up! Some of these people are simply unbelievable.

8. I know!
...I watched in shock as he went down the line as mindless freeper after mindless freeper put down their koolaid long enough to scream "bush."

When he went back around to ask them why they were voting for him, EVERY SINGLE ONE said "terrorism." At least the Kerry supporters came up with actual, relevant reasons instead of regurgitating the same old "be very afraid" terrorism BS.

There are few things sadder than a young conservative.
They've lost their heart, soul and compassion so very young. :(

19. I thought it was frightening
He was inciting them as far as I am concerned. Was waiting for a physical confrontation.

Don't think I could have controlled myself when I hear those young women yell "cheerleaders for Bush".

Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 10:28 PM by kysrsoze
actually read a newspaper or a decent internet source? None of them knew what they were talking about. I could be just one of the older generation misunderstanding the younger ones, but none of them could cite any actual facts and half sounded like they were parroting someone. Some girl said she was a (obviously student) teacher and they were discussing No Child Left Behind. She said, "Well, there's been good and bad and we've been talking about it in the lounge." Really? What friggin' good has come out of a program that was never funded?

Then again, it could just be the fact that ASU is where everyone goes to party and get a tan.

9. Okay, so the Kerry supporters KILLED!
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 07:03 PM by Atman
WOW! Tweety asked "Who's for Bush" -- YAAAAYYY! Lots of screaming...sounded impressive.

But then he asked for Kerry supporters and the place went nuts! Screaming, cheering, whistling, chanting...just kept getting bigger and louder as Tweety went to credits. SO...the Bushista frat boys got the face time, but they in no way represented the overall student population. I am relieved...my apologies to any Arizona students who may have felt caught in my broad brush!

12. ASU or UofA?
Was this the Michael Moore event or just some campus visit? In the rally we had last night it was a sea of Democrats with small pockets of Republicans. The Republicans were loud and disruptive and eventually many were escorted out while the crowd inside cheered very loudly for some of the points Moore made.

16. REPORT FROM ASU!
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 07:33 PM by Coventina
I spent several hours on campus today, as I am now a full time student! :-)

For some reason, MOST of the crowd at the CNN stage were pro-Kerry and MOST of the crowd at the MSNBC stage were pro-Bush. I have no idea why. There were at least some of both party at both venues.

The crowd around the MSNBC stage were much more aggressive (of course). I heckled them for awhile, but I had stuff I had to do, so I moved on. I was shouting at the frat boys to go enlist, etc, but of course they ignored me. Cowardly scum!

Anyway, it's exciting times here at ASU! Usually we are a very apolitical campus. It's been exciting to see all of the Kerry supporters, because AZ is historically a red state.

on edit: clarity

22. Saw that...........
I was 17, or 18 in '69, '70. I knew no one who was FOR the war. No one. My husband was in VN and most of my friends. We weren't partying and having a big ol' time. We were serious and concerned about our husbands, brothers, and friends. I wish Chris would have asked them if they would sign up. It reminded me a lot of "Jay Walking". SAD!

23. I can't remember
anyone being pro war when I was young (during the Vietnam era). Everyone was scared to death they may have to go (even if there was little chance). These kids have no idea what war is today because the media doesn't cover the war in Iraq the same way.

31. A lot of young guys who worship what they perceive as
brute strength in the W.H. For them life is
simple, if something doesn't agree with you
just beat it into submission. They didn't sound
much like college material, but then again maybe
they need it more than most.
