Daily U.S. Casualties 8/29/2003

As of Thursday, 281 U.S. soldiers have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq, according to the Department of Defense.

The British government has reported 49 deaths. Denmark's military has reported one death.

On or since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 143 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, according to the latest Department of Defense figures.

The latest identifications reported by the U.S. military:


Sgt. Gregory A. Belanger, 24, of Narragansett, R.I., was killed Wednesday in Hallia, Iraq. He died when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle. He was assigned to the 325th Military Intelligence Battalion, U.S. Army Reserves at Ayer, Mass.

Spc. Rafael L. Navea, 34, of Pittsburgh was killed Wednesday in Fallujah, Iraq. He died when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle. Navea was assigned to C Battery, 2nd Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, based at Fort Sill, Okla.

Pfc. Pablo Manzano, 19, of Heber, Calif., died on Aug. 25 in Logistical Support Area Dogwood, Iraq as a result of a non-combat weapons discharge. He was assigned to B Company, 54th Engineer Battalion, V Corps in Bamberg, Germany.

is from the town next to mine, his dad still lives here. It was the cover story in our local paper yesterday...very sad.
