RATE A 5!: Thirty States May Ban Abortion Within One Year
if Bush is re-elected.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041005/ap_on_re_us/abortion_states_2
Thirty states are poised to make abortion illegal within a year if the Supreme Court reversed its 1973 ruling establishing a woman's legal right to an abortion, an advocacy group said Tuesday.

The Center for Reproductive Rights said some states have old laws on the books that would be triggered by the overturning of the landmark Roe v. Wade (news - web sites) decision. Others have language in their state constitutions or strongly anti-abortion legislatures that would act quickly if the federal protection for abortion was ended and the issue reverted to the states.

"The building blocks are already in place to recriminalize abortion," said Nancy Northup, the center's president.

Currently, it is believed that five of the nine justices support abortion rights, but that balance could be tipped if President Bush (news - web sites), in a second term, nominates a new justice who reflects his anti-abortion views. Democratic contender John Kerry (news - web sites) is a strong supporter of abortion rights.

2. Like hell they will...
I'll kick some anti-choice butt first. I'll get all the women of my state to beat down the doors of the politicians until they get their common sense back. It will not happen in my state.

I keep thinking that even if Kerry gets elected, that pro-choicers shouldn't relax. They did during the Clinton administration, and that was a mistake. Pro-choicers need to work hard on the state level to preserve and enhance abortion rights. Even though abortion is legal by federal law, there's still a lot of regulations that make it very hard to obtain one.

3. nah, this is just a distraction. Don't worry about it. Trust me, they
will never ban abortion, but it sure distracts from the failures of the bush regime.

7. I would suggest to those
who say this will never happen to pull your head out of the sand and take a look at reality.

This attitude reminds me of the people sitting around during the lead up to the iraq invasion saying "it will never happen don't worry about it" up until the very hour it started.

These people just need another term and they will turn this entire country in to a right wing fascist police state. Bush will appoint as many 30 year old nazis to the SCOTUS as he can, and they'll be destroying every constitutional protection they can for the next 40 years LONG after bush is gone.

If bush gets another term they WILL ban abortion. They WILL take away what few rights GLBT have worked for decades to win. Liberals WILL be considered terrorists/traitors/whatever they come up with. And you can bet your ass it will be all war all the time.

I think the reason bush isn't polling at 10% right now is because even people in the party don't realize what another bush term will mean. If you think it won't get any worse then I have some ocean front property for sale.

8. Great post
I agree. In my worst nightmares the likes of RW loons like Rick Santorum will join Tony Scalia and Clarence "me too" Thomas and then we can expect to be living in the right wing fascist police state you described so well.

Welcome!:-)
