Gun nuts and abortion zealots--without them, the GOP would cease to exist as a "major" party and the Democrats could split into centrist and leftist factions. these two groups have forced the GOP so far to the right that Hitler and Kruschev can't even reach them anymore. Unfortunately, that has dragged the rest of the US political spectrum along with it, so that now we are taking 16th century radical "christian" fundamentalism seriously in secular politics! Absurd.
