I changed my subject line because my sarcasm was not detected. Sarcasm is in this post. Sorry but I thought it pretty obvious.

So all is well. It is just that crazy Howard Dean and that awful Max Cleland spreading those rumors. Heh heh.

The Draft: Rumors, and That's All They Are

SNIP..."Oct. 11 issue - For months, democratic operatives have muttered that news about a revived military draft could become the silver bullet that stops President George W. Bush's re-election campaign. But the White House and Pentagon emphatically deny any intention to reinstitute conscription: in the first presidential debate last week, Bush made sure to include a reference in his closing remarks to the "all-volunteer Army."

SNIP..."But some Kerry supporters—and prominent Kerry surrogates—are spreading more alarming rumors about a reinstated draft. "You do not have the draft hanging over your heads—not yet. But pay attention, boys and girls, to what you've got going on in Iraq," disabled Vietnam vet and former U.S. senator Max Cleland, an important Kerry backer, recently told a student audience. At the University of Colorado-Boulder last week, cafeteria tables were littered with cards signed by self-described Students for Kerry, warning YOU'RE GONNA GET DRAFTED. (In an "open letter" to America's students, independent candidate Ralph Nader recently claimed the "machinery for drafting a new generation of young Americans is being quietly put into place.")

The most explicit claims about a Bush plan to revive conscription have come from onetime Kerry rival Howard Dean, who charged in a recent newspaper column that draft boards "have already been notified that 20-year-olds and medical personnel will be called up first." Laura Gross, Dean's spokeswoman, says Dean spoke with two draft-board officials in different parts of the country who told him they had been "put on notice there is going to be a draft... Bush has not denied that there's going to be a draft."END SNIP

But go away, there is nothing here. The White House and Pentagon deny it all.

The cat is out of the bag?:

"YOUNG MEN AND BUSH: Zogby sees a growing problem. My own view is that a draft is not unthinkable in the next few years - and that many young men see this as a natural progression from our current travails. This is the sleeper issue - under the radar but beginning to take off. It shouldn't be exploited by unscrupulous Democrats, but it can certainly be brought up in the debates. Edwards should raise it with Cheney. Will we need one? Why won't we?"

16. What year was the last draft ended? It was in the 70s, wasn't it?
Called Selective Service, but wasn't there still a lottery until the 70s sometime?

17. That's right, don't believe your lying eyes
Just because the whole situation is inevitably trending in that direction, Bush and co have said it's not true, and nobody wants it and so there!

Unfortunately, reality has its own imperatives. "No intention of crash landing! Honest!" says the pilot, but guess what, the engines are on fire and the landing gear just fell off.

19. I go by the TDS Scale
You know, the President Bush/Gov. Bush debate, where everything Gov. Bush Says is the exact opposite of what he did and said as President.

Well if Logic works, President Bush 1.0 and :shudder: President Bush 2.0 says and does will be exact opposite. Bush 1.0 says in debate 1 that the Armies will remain all volunteer.

Draft is comming.

20. Every day is opposite day
It doesn't matter what occasion, the minute * makes a proclamation of intent, I know to expect the exact opposite. It's status quo.

21. Some good points on possible draft from Dean's column last Monday.
He also used some of these points on Tim Russert's show last night.

http://www.yubanet.com/artman/publish/article_13568.shtml

SNIP.."Here is the evidence that makes a draft likely:

The U.S. Army has acknowledged that they are stretched thin and that finding new recruits is challenging. They recently placed 300 new recruiters in the field. Bonuses for new recruits to the Army have risen by 67 percent to a maximum of $10,000 and $15,000 for hard-to-fill specialties."

SNIP:..."The extended tours of duty have made service less attractive for both the regular armed forces, and particularly for the National Guard and Reserves. To meet this year's quota for enlistees, the Army has sped up the induction of "delayed entry" recruits, meaning they are already borrowing from next year's quotas in order to meet this year's numbers....."

And there are more in the column.
