The NRA called my brother-in-law the other day....
He's a big time hunter and fisherman. He always has been. He's a gun guy, and a tournament winning fisherman. He was West Virginia's state champion amateur archer at one point, although he lives in Ohio. At least, that's the way I remember it - I was young when he was into archery. The point is, though, he's a "sportsman." The NRA's type of guy, often.

So they called him, wanting him to join, and by the way, a contribution of $70. He asked the caller if the NRA was endorsing one of the presidential candidates this time 'round, and of course they told him Bush/Cheney.

His reply, to the best of my sister's memory: "I wouldn't give those motherfuckers a penny! You bunch of cocksuckers can kiss my fucking ass if you're for that son-of-a-bitch!"

Not bad, from a sportsman. He's their base, and he now hates them more than ever. I believe he used to be a member, when it was mostly about gun safety. When they turned into a G.O.P. tool, they lost my BIL.

5. Well, we should all hold our breath until they do...
I think there is no doubt who NRA is going to endorse.

7. I think it's pretty clear who they won't endorse.
They could always withhold an endorsement, but I agree it's likely they'll endorse Bush now that the AWB has expired.

8. I think they'd announce it everywhere
possibly even including their website if they did.

10. I think a better clue would be an announcement of some kind.
"They are running ads against Kerry"

I wonder why.

15. That doesn't look like an announcement
stating which candidate, if any, they are endorsing.

"So is the NRA right about Kerry?"

I don't know. You tell me. Personally, I don't need the NRA to tell me where Kerry stands on the gun issue.

They are real neutral. Do you agree with the NRA?

20. I'm not saying the NRA doesn't want Kerry to lose.
Obviously they do. That doesn't mean they've endorsed Bush yet. I certainly never claimed they were neutral.

Do you agree with the NRA?

No, they're a bunch of gun grabbers as far as I'm concerned.

16. Well, that's what the caller said.
According to my brother-in-law, as explanation for his little outburst. All hearsay, in other words.

I don't know what their "official" stance is, but you know who they're pulling for. And why they're raising money now.

4. the nra sucks
like you said, they USED to be about gun safety, and enjoying shooting sports. now, they are a bunch of conspiracy theorists who would rather scream about liberal gun-grabbers than actually take action to make current laws work

Conversely, my dad, who's never shot a gun in his life, but has long been a right-wing nutcase, just joined the NRA! Run for cover!!!

21. A friend of mine....
goes to NRA banquets every year in Natchez, MS. He's not a repub, but gets a complimentary ticket and so goes for the free booze, food, and entertainment value of watching obese rednecks get drunk and spend their paychecks buying raffle tickets from 18 year old "show" girls working the floors.

He said this year (last night, actually) the place was eerily vacant, loads of empty tables, very quiet, depressing.

22. My hubby bought a lifetime membership in NRA a long time ago.
Sometime around 1986/87. It cost about $125 then, and I went nuts! That's way too mcuh $$ for a damn mag subscription!! But we were both working and if tha's really what he wanted, it was OK. He respected the NRA then. He doesn't anymore.

He's still a member, and I'm sure they're sorry for ever offering a lifetime membership. But I suspect there a lot of people like my hubby who read the magazine, but completely disreguard their BS.
