Pictures of Ivan (just before landfall)...

This is one big damn hurricane.

Looks like its going to go up that little "cut" in Alabama. (Alabamers if you can tell me what that is called, Id appreciate). That would seem to make it worse, it can get inland more without losing strength. Ironic considering how close Alabama is to being landlocked. edit: I now know it is Mobile Bay... I need to brush up on my geography.

1. That cut is Mobile Bay with most of the city of Mobile on the NW side
The worst will be the possible storm surge amplification due to water piling up in the bay.

4. I heard on the news that it is hitting at high tide also,
which the weather guy is the worst possible time, for obvious reasons. Amplifies your comment Dudley.

10. Missed Mobile bay, going up Orange Beach probably.
here is a good reason to evac, e-mail from my sister in law:

"Good News! (for us anyway), The National Hurricane Center forcasts Ivan to hit the Mississippi/Alabama line around midnight tonight. We're about 130 miles away and hurricane force winds extend outward for 105 miles. So we should only get tropical storm force winds or a little higher. We're all doing fine, our electricity is still on (as you may have guessed), and (xxxx) just got done making biscuits!"

now they are within range, and surely gettin slammed.

Damn.

2. Next up! Jeanne
Ivan is HUGE! And they just seem to keep coming.

I'm in the midwest, but with all of the extreme weather it won't surprise me if we have a couple of blizzards this year, too.

19. Ugh!
I hadn't heard that! I'm afraid we're going to be in for a doozy here in the midwest. We had a blizzard here in '95 and temperatures dropped so low with high winds that they closed the schools for a couple of days. When they do that around here, you KNOW is dangerously cold. We rarely close down for winter weather events like snowfall and a little ice, let alone cold temps.

Thing is, 1995 was also hurricane Andrew. I guess that's what started me thinking about it.

Unfortunately, those extreme cold temperatures will only be fodder for the global warming nay-sayers. *shakes head*

7. I have a problem
with all the drama with the onset of hurricane. Media blowhards doing photo ops standing in the wind and rain.

Meanwhile a friend of mine is battling trying to feed hundreds of nursing home patients from the last hurricane....commandeered a dunking donuts truck as no gas to bring meals from local restuarants...absolutely no help from FEMA....no power...dehydration biggest problem with patients as no air conditioning or water..

That's what the media should be reporting...

8. I hear you, and believe or not others do too
They were talking about this on NPR today regarding power outages. The power suppliers do not give precedent to nursing homes, because by law they should have their own power supply. Most dont due to costs So they are gonna change that law because of what happened like with your friend.

So it was in the media and hopefully it will be fixed.

12. I know there are hundreds of thousands who still don't have
power.

And I know that there are many destitute seniors who are now homeless because they owned their mobile homes outright and they were destroyed in the storm.

I know the media focus is always on the next big thing, and as a nation we have ADD.

14. Here in Tennessee
We're feeling the first waves of light rain and winds. They closed one of my sons' schools for two days ( Georgia) expecting 60mph winds and lots of power outage. We lost power for 1 hr 40 minutes, but the guys rushing to trim treelimbs may have accidentally caused that.
Everyone stay safe. I got the laundry off the line, but help us if this forest of trees crashes down!

17. MAde landfall in Pensacola and P.City
Path heading up to my neck of the woods, but I find it Strange Purdue signed an executive order which I started a thread on just now starting Sept. 1 and is calling Ga. a State of Emergency until further notice. He mentions Ivan in the new Executive order today but this doesn't make sense. We will get some wind and rain but never knew us to be under a State of Emergency starting in September. Also on his homepage..Project for a New Georgia?
September 1?

16. Two (some report 4) deaths attributed to Ivan
"In Louisiana, a cancer patient and a nursing home resident died in traffic while they were being moved to higher ground."

I want to know more about this. Doesn't sound right to me.
