New York City DU'ers , HELP
I need to know a cheaper hotel for taking college students to New York next month (October), within walking distance of the Grand Hyatt at Grand Central Station. The convention hotel is asking $289 a night plus taxes, which would cost our students $415 for five nights, with four to a room.
We have an uneven number of males to females; and with the maximum four in a room, that leaves me, a female, without roommates and I certainly cannot afford it. Anyone know of a good alternative? I've never been there and I'm hopelessly ignorant.

1. What are your dates?
There are an assortment of smaller hotels that would offer better rates through hotels.com, but it would be easier to advise you about places to stay if I knew the dates. Columbus Day weekend, for example, it is particularly hard to find a bargain.

2. The places around MSG/Penn Station are cheaper, but it's a bit of a walk.

4. Contact the Vanderbilt Y.
It's a very short walk to the Grand Hyatt, good neighborhood, rates should be reasonable.

It's on 47th Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave. May be as low as $60 a night for a single private room.
