I don’t know, folks, there are an awwwwwfully lot of “Kerry/Edwards” signs
...and bumper stickers in my neighborhood…

I know there have been some “gloom and doom” polls appearing lately (just in time for Kitty Kelly’s book and Dan Rather's report), but I can’t get over the number of “Kerry/Edward” signs, and bumper stickers, in my neighborhood. What makes this so significant is that I live in a community that’s 2 to 1 Republican over Democrat. I just don’t see that many "Bush/Cheney" signs.

Just this morning after dropping my daughter off at school I drove through a ritzy part of town on my way to work. I don’t normally drive this route but was amazed to see 3 Kerry signs on one block and no Bush signs. These are houses that are probably valued at 10 times what my house is, so I was amazed to see that there are upper-rungs of the economic ladder supporting Kerry, more so perhaps than what the media want us to believe. I wondered if I were to see, for argument, 3 Kerry signs and one Bush sign on one block, could this be extrapolated to mean 75% of those residents on that block support Kerry? Or would those residents without signs represent a 50/50 split with a slight advantage given to Kerry? Or (horrors!) are most of those residents without signs complacently supporting the present junta and just not want to advertise it? What summaries can be gleaned from polling yard signs and bumper stickers? I don’t know since I’m not a statistician, but what I’ve seen sure looks promising!

Also of interest:
Recently I attended a Boy Scout meeting with my six-year son at his elementary school. This was an “introduction to scouting” so there were many boys of different ages there. My son wanted to get into scouting as he has just entered the first grade and many of his friends and classmates were joining the scouts. I think it is mainly for the camaraderie. Anyway, there was one boy there, about 9 or 10 years old, who was wearing a black shirt with white wording on the front that read “’You are either with us or with the enemy’—George W. Bush” and I thought “Oh, well, this is GOP country.” But when he passed me I read on the back of his shirt “Enemy.” Hmmm—maybe the community is not so much pro-GOP as anti-Bush.

And I’ve seen a lot of anti-Bush statements on non-“librul-like” vehicles in my community. In addition to "Volvos and hybrids," I see anti-Bush stickers on pickups as well. One large “He-Man”-type truck had written across the cab’s back window “George, I can’t afford you anymore” with stick-on letters. After careful deliberation with my wife (could have been a comment on a sour marriage or a dispute with a business partner), we took this to be an anti-Bush statement.

So, to Hell with the polls, especially from Media who have proven to be shills for the Bush Junta (remember CNN and the “yawning boy” story?). As I recall, the “polls” had George up a few points over Gore in 2000 right up to election day eve, and we all know who really won.

I’ve got a strong sense that Kerry is going to win, and win big!!!

39. Johnson County has been awesome
I drove down Lee Blvd today, and was shocked to see at least 15 K/E lawn signs to one sad, lonely Bush* sign. And these are expensive homes - guess they love their country more than their tax cuts!

I was in Prairie Village today and again...K/E and Kansas for Kerry signs everywhere. Not a Bush* sign in sight (although, sadly, lots of Kobach signs).

Bravo to our fearless Kansas Democrats!

4. I think that the Republicans who intend to vote for Bush
are too embarrassed to publicly demonstrate their support for Bush. They know how dumb and crooked he is and they realize that a Bush sign on their car or lawn tells the world that they admire that sort of person. Yet, they will vote for him anyway because of any number of one issue or self-centered views about certain advantages that they will personally achieve through Bush's election.

He has a degree in econonic and is well compensated, but fails to see the "taxing" impact of deficits, deterioration of the middle class, and decline of education in the country.

40. oh, I know plenty of these people
and they are all over my neighborhood too. In my entire subdivision, I have only seen one lawn sign so far and it is a bush/cheney sign. These people who get these big tax cuts don't give a shit if everyone is suffering around them, if the country is going in the wrong direction, etc. All they care about is their bank account and which candidate adds faster to it.

7. I agree - to Hell with the polls
The truth will be seen on Election Day. I've never trusted polls, anyway - I'm always suspicious of just *who* are being polled. For example, I doubt many disadvantaged people get polled.

They don't reflect voter turnout! I am POSITIVE this will be a record year in voter turnout. Even people who are not yet sold on Kerry will vote just to get W out of office.

I live in a Dallas suburb and have seen a few in my area but when driving through the more affluent, old areas of Dallas, I have seen many Kerry/Edwards signs and bumper stickers. One of these days maybe I can afford to move closer more like minded folks.

11. in my republican town
we had hundreds of folks show up to get their signs yesterday,
and now they are all over town.
One big conservative developer asked for 130 signs, to put up on
all his properties.
An older lady asked for a button, and said she was a lifelong
repub, but was voting for Kerry. My partner said
"Your party has been hijacked!"
she said,
"That's RIGHT. I'm so glad to hear someone else say it!"

I'm seeing many, many, MANY more Kerry/edwards stickers, in addition to anti-bush............everywhere!

Kerry is running a grassroots campaign (not so much in the Media) and I hold to my belief that there are many more people out there that never get polled who will vote and will NOT VOTE BUSH.

WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO I feel good! :bounce:

And I'm in a conservative area. It's just weird! We won't know for sure until after the election, but I really think there is a huge grassroots movement for progress and Kerry and away from the regressive conservative agenda. And that's just not being reflected in the polls. I'm feeling really optimistic!

There are tons of signs and bumper stickers, and there is a lot more Dem. campaigning locally than there has been in the past.

I really have to question the polls based upon what I see and what I remember four years ago.

I keep track of the bumper stickers I see as I drive around each day; so far I've noted 104 for Kerry, 60 for Bush. The yard sign gap is even higher.

18. Well here in the democrat stronghold of Pittsburgh....
...all I've seen so far are Kerry stickers and signs. Not a single Bush sign, though on the highway the occasional truck or SUV will have a 'W' sticker, but they could always be just passing through...

There is even a group here in Pittsburgh that have made their own anti-bush pro-kerry posters, maybe 10 of them, and they're plastering them all over town. In my neighborhood every telephone poll has 'No W' signs on them...

...I'll have to ask my parents what they're seeing. They live in an affluent gated community in Nevada...They're both very independent minded, and definately don't like Bush. I have to convince them to vote for Kerry, or they'll vote for an independent candidate. I'm still working on it.

One "W" to every 5+ Kerry/Edwards stickers! In this area, people are serious about their "W", so it's not like they don't want to advertise or mess up their bumpers. I think they are becoming a minority and I am very hopeful that VA may go blue this year!

27. No signs in yards
Don't take this as such a positive. Did it occur to you that Republicans in ritzy neighborhoods don't put signs in their yards? Or that their subdivision doesn't allow signs in yards? I can't imagine wealthy Republicans here in Houston having signs in front of their houses. Don't go rejoicing just yet.

28. West Central Ohio
I got my yard sign last night! The party chairman dropped it off and said they have distributed 500 so far. He also said back in 2000 for Gore, they were only able to get 50 out. What a difference! My county is very rural (only 36,000 total in the county), mostly repub., but I think the dem's are making progress. I've seen a lot of Kerry/Edwards signs, very few Bush. The neighbor down the street took down several weeks ago his "Support Bush/Support the Troops" sign that had been up for two years. Not sure if it means no more support or just getting ready for that brand new W sign. Let's hope it's no more support for Bush.

29. Report from Florida
I live in the most hard over Democratic county in the state (Broward County). In my driving around, I have seen ONE yard sign for Kerry and ZERO yard signs for Bush. I have seen very few bumper stickers or window stickers and they run about 4 to 3 for Kerry. Before the primary last month, the place was plastered with yard signs for candidates for judgeships and minor local and county offices. I don't think the whole election is whipping up much enthusiasm here and Kerry will need a huge majority in Broward to carry Florida.

38. I live in Johnson County too!!
I have lived here all my life and it is overwhelmingly Republican, always has been. But the Kerry signs are EVERYWHERE!!! It is so awesome. Even in 96, when Clinton had a much bigger lead on Dole, there were more Dole signs here. (Maybe because Dole was from Kansas?) This is the 9th prez election I have voted in and I have NEVER seen so many signs for the Dem candidate here. NEVER!!! I live in NE Johnson County - the older part - and I drove around a few weeks ago and counted over 50 Kerry signs and only ONE for Bush (actually two, a guy just west of 63 and Roe has TWO Bush signs in his yard).

My friend called me today to tell me she drove through the city from up north to UMKC and saw tons of Kerry signs and no Bush signs. MO is more Dem, but she was shocked ot see NO Bush signs.

We are wondering if to get a Bush sign you have to sign a loyalty oath and fork over a huge contribution. Does anyone know?

I don't think Johnson County is turning Dem, because there are Kris Kobach signs everywhere. I am going to the Moore office tomorrow - it's at 78 and Quivira - to pick up my Dennis Moore sign. I think he may have a tough battle on his hands. And Kobach scares the shit out of me.

I went to Southwest Jewels today to get some Kerry buttons, and they had free Dennis Moore lawn signs. Surprisingly, they're asking that we not display the signs until October 2nd - they want to have an 'impact day' where Moore signs suddenly sprout all over the district. Pretty good thinking, although it's getting depressing seeing so many Kobach signs all over town. He scares the shit out of me, too.
