Kerry: will replace Bush's "broken promises" to firefighters
Another story the media missed.

Kerry wants to put more firefighters on the streets

By Holly Ramer, Associated Press, 7/9/2003 17:52

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry said Wednesday he'd replace President Bush's ''broken promises'' to firefighters with a pledge of his own to put 100,000 more of them on the streets.

The proposal, modeled after the Clinton administration COPS program for police officers, earned the senator from Massachusetts a standing ovation at the annual meeting of the Professional Firefighters of New Hampshire.

''What we need is an administration that understands how you make America stronger,'' he said.

Kerry said Bush likes to talk about the heroic firefighters who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, but has failed to ensure that their surviving peers across the country get the training and equipment they need.

The result is that bridges, nuclear plants and other possible targets of terrorism aren't being as well protected as they should, Kerry said.

''There isn't one of you as professional firefighters people who put your lives on the line who doesn't understand what it means to realize promises have been broken,'' he said.

2. And in NYC
where we lost over 300 firefighters on 9/11 and where bush came and made all kinds of hollow speeches we're now closing down 8 firehouses because of budget cuts. That's a smart move by Kerry.

3. It's more than a move...
it's the difference between REAL homeland security and Bush's empty rhetoric. Of course, politically, expect an endorsement from the Firefighters Union. They relate to Kerry because when Kerry served in Vietnam he was known for risking his life time and time again to rescue others, and refused to leave anyone behind. They can relate to that experience. It's what they do.

4. I'd rather buttress our Home Defenses now, too!
Every dollar we've spent in Iraq might as well have been tossed out of a C-131 cargo plane. BUT-we can't just leave (like 'Nam) "There's oil in dem der hills! Don't cha know,Pecos Pete!"
