Which government agencies would you abolish?
Liberals are often accused of being for big government, but I don't think that's true. I think if we took a head count we would find that many on the Left favor getting rid of certain government agencies, though probably not the same ones that have been targeted for years by the Heritage Foundation.

I would abolish the Selective Service System.

1. Dept. of Homeland Security
It's bloated and wasteful. They can't even account for their own funds.

Beef up the FBI and let the National Guard actually guard our own country instead.

the NG units would rather guard our airports and borders than a convoy of Halliburton cement trucks I betcha.

8. there's no "there" there at Homeland Security
It is cobbled together from existing departments all over Washington. The central structure is undeveloped and underfunded. Customs, Border Patrol, Coast Guard etc still operate as they did before. They have new badges and shoulder patches and a new "boss". that's it

3. The Department of Commerce.
How different is the Secretary of Commerce with the Trade Representative, anyway? Isn't both sort of redundant?

14. DOC needs to be re-aligned
Census, NOAA, NIST (Natl Inst. of Standards and Technology) - not necessarily what you think of when you think Commerce.

more government means more jobs.
Better oversight and waste management is needed to hold DOD accountable for losing billions of dollars.

16. I think a proper department of defense is fine.
As long as it remains a department of defense.

Demolishing the military would not be a good idea.

17. CIA, FBI, NSA, etc
Wipe them out and start over. One department for concerns inside of the US (drug smuglling, kidnapping, bank robberies) and one for things happening outside of our borders (mainly what the CIA and NSA do).

18. ONDCP...
... ONDCP out. DEA reduced by at least 50%, probably more. Then a slow grinding away of the overall military budget. I suspect we could adequately defend ourselves for about half of what we're spending now.

22. I'd like a moratorium on NASA and cut defense budget
HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGEEEEEEE BUDGET, NASA, some money well spent, loads of money wasted.

We don't need as many nuclear subs as we have; we don't need more and more supersonic war planes...all of that is crap. Times have changed.

Instead of searching for Mars worms and building high tech killing apparatus, let's spend money on "bombing" the ghettos then rebuilding the areas into decent housing for low income people. Let's spend that money on Healthcare and education........ Just a thought.

26. Not NASA
Some jobs just take 100 years for the benefits to show through. NASA has had some huge mistakes but also has a lot of extremely intelligent people. I think what they are doing brings in a lot of "raw knowledge" that will take years to even sort out, never mind do something with. But if we don't need it now, we'll need it later.
