My email conversation with CBS
I think it's important to keep expressing our support for Dan Rather. If he ends up on the short end of this stick, I truly fear for our democracy.

,
Thank you for your reply. I stand behind Dan Rather as I believe he is one of the few journalists willing to take risks and ask tough questions. I hope CBS also stands behind Dan Rather. If CBS does not give their full support to Dan Rather, then I believe we will have lost the "war" on one of basic rights - Free Press.

Dear Dr.
Thank you for taking the time to write. Your point of view is
important to us. As you can imagine, the story did take courage to present,
and it's unfortunate that the documents have become the center of the story
rather than the substance of the story itself; however, we do regret that
their authenticity was accepted so readily. Your support is greatly
appreciated. Rest assured, we will continue to pursue the highest level of
journalistic integrity, the apology stands, and we will pursue future
stories with the most rigorous of research.

Regina,

My admiration for Dan Rather only got higher tonight. He is the only
one who appears brave enough to ask the tough questions of Bush and his
out of control administration. The only hope for this country is a
FREE PRESS!

Dan Rather is a committed and ethical journalist. Don't forget that!

I didn't get a reply but my feelings aren't hurt...I'm sure their cup runneth over.

2. I disagree with that CBS comment on the documents that
their "authenticity was accepted so readily."

They had a handwriting analyst check the signatures.

They talked to people who were in the Texas Air National Guard at that time.

Regarding the argument that they should have talked to the source-of-the-source (Bill Burkett's source), that can't be done with anonymous sources without ruining their anonymity.

Burkett was anonymous when the story aired.

3. Good for you!
And thanks for the link. I just email this:

Please accept my support for CBS and Dan Rather. A far more important story than if the documents were forgeries or not would be on how the right wing so quickly and easily debunked the real story.

An investigative report on the Free Republic before the election, far more important, would be a good way to make amends. :)

Thank you.

5. more than happy to "nudge"
I think this important. The media controls the message, and the WH controls the media-- Fascism is on it's way

6. I wrote one too! Thanks for the link.
You are exactly right about investigative journalists needing to have the guts to behave like investigative journalists. Dan Rather continues to stick his neck out and I applaud him for that!
