In response to “Keep your eye on Dean if you want a loser in ‘04” (July 7), I think it’s time to bring people back to reality. The writer wants to talk about the loss of jobs in Vermont. Maybe we should start by talking about the jobs lost in the last three years under Bush — 3 million. Wow, there are a lot of zeroes.
Those are the people who have filed for unemployment benefits. That doesn’t include people who have dropped out of the work force completely. The real number is around 6 million to 8 million.
Howard Dean paid off a $700 million state deficit, started a state rainy-day fund in case of a recession (he served through two Bush recessions), introduced tax incentives to help create business and jobs, and raised the minimum wage twice.
Howard Dean did oppose the war in Iraq, which many people in this country and a majority of people worldwide still do (which was evident by how many countries actually sent troops or money — three total). Howard Dean said there were more important issues to worry about, such North Korea and Iran. Maybe it’s because they actually have weapons of mass de- struction.
As far as the “doom and gloom from the left,” I don’t think we’re the ones saying we’re in immediate danger, showing bogus terror alert levels and using the crutch of Sept. 11 to prey on the fears of Americans.
If Bush wants to be elected — he wasn’t elected in 2000, he was appointed by Clarence Thomas — he can start by talking about his record, finding one WMD and creating one job. I know of one job opening in 2004 that Mr. Dean will fit in quite nicely — president of the United States. Have a nice day!
