O.K. so does the number of American casualties include...
..only those killed in action immediately or those who are wounded and later die from their wounds? I know this had been back and forthed a while ago but looking at the numbers on icasualties I can't tell.

1. As I understand it.
Only those killed in hostile fire and who die prior to evacuation are in the number.

2. The death toll includes all american soldiers who die
while serving in operation iraqi-freedom. This includes those wounded who then die on the operating table in, say, Germany. It also includes accidents, as well as people who die of heart attacks while serving in Iraq, etc.

You can read descriptions here

3. It used to be
that "casualties" included all killed, wounded and missing. I'm not sure when that changed but now they don't even mention the wounded which bugs me. Nor do they mention the number of Iraqi casualties which bugs me as well. In Vietnam they proudly reported daily "body counts" but I suppose since we're "liberating" Iraq, that wouldn't play well.

4. and god only knows of how many have been
killed in action in Afghanistan. You never see those figures. I foolishly thought after Pat Tillmon's death last spring that those losses might get more attention. Silly me.
