OH MY GOSH!! Look outside, pigs must be flying!! LETTER from my mom!!!
Ok, some of you have seen my posts about my mom before, I love her dearly, she is a wonderful mother...but she is SO conservative, because of the abortion issue, and because she is Southern Baptist...

But, she loves the environment, cares about people...etc.
I've been talking to her a lot and sending her articles...usually she doesn't answer at all...

About 6 months ago, I was talking to her, and she said something for the first time against Bush...I couldn't belileve it...first time she has ever criticized a Republican (she loved Reagan)...

I sent her the latest Krugman editorial today:
http://pkarchive.org/column/091004.html
Now, mind you, she doesn't like Kerry and will never ever vote for Kerry, because of abortion...but for her to say this...
well...I think pigs will be flying by tomorrow
PS-The lady Mrs. D******* that she is talking about is the PASTOR'S WIFE!!

Hi #1, M**, and Grand-pets,
Thanks for the article. I was talking with Mrs. D*** a few days ago, and said I'd like a 3rd choice. I told her one "talks the talk," but I'm not sure if he "walks the walk" - and talk is "cheap." The other doesn't bother to "talk the talk". You will be pleased to know, however, that I did defend Kerry's ads earlier, because there I thought they were clearer and not "mud slinging."

1. I would dearly love a third choice also. But we only really have two
to choose among.

Bush will harm us more than Kerry, so Bush is not the choice to make. It is great to see that your mom has realized that We the People really have only one choice.

2. No chance of getting her to see the abortion issue...
... as a matter between an individual and God?

There are plenty of action items on Jesus' "To Do" list that merit attention, and would likely be more helpful in decreasing abortions than outlawing the procedure. Or does your Mom believe that -- not meaning to sound sarcastic -- prohibition was a big success, too?

What about the meek? And what about that whole rich dude and an eye of a needle?

As for marriage, to the best of my recollection "finances" comes in way ahead of "gay marriage" as a cause for divorce; for that matter, finances are often cited as a reason for abortions. So rather than misdirecting the public's attention for short-term political gain, maybe we need a President who will work to lift ALL boats economically and thereby address the root cause of numerous social ills -- rather than focusing on handouts to his wealthy contributors (and shifting the tax burden to the economically-strapped middle and lower classes).

Keep plugging.

3. Its a pretty personal thing for her...she was bron in the 1940s...
Edited on Sun Sep-12-04 10:57 PM by jab105
her mother (my grandmother) never wanted children...her husband was sick at the time (he died when my mom was very young)...anyways, my grandmother was a very tough woman, and not very nice either...she would tell my mother later when she was mad at her that she would have had an abortion if she could have (heck, she used to tell me that my mother should have done the same...she was umm, not the nicest)...

So, every time my mother talks about abortion, she pictures the baby as herself...that she could have been aborted...

So, no...you cant talk to her about that...I'm pretty against it myself...I'm not pro-choice...but the other issues, I am with the democrats, and the comparison is so great, that I have to be democratic...my mothers sole concern is abortion when it comes to politics...

PPS-Gay marriage isn't that big of a thing for her, she worked with a lot of gay people and adored them...

4. Abortion?
Edited on Sun Sep-12-04 11:05 PM by lizzy
Some people say Bush made his girlfriend to have an abortion.
Has Bush really been practicing what he preaches?

5. Bummer
On both issues -- Grandma not being "very nice" and the state in which it's left your Mom.

Good luck.

p.s. I'm not pro-abortion either; but I'm pro-choice. (I tend to find the "pro-choice" label more intellectually honest than "pro-life", since pro-choicers aren't advocating death for all -- but pro-lifers *are* trying to remove choice.)

7. I think my dad is like this
He's a hard core southern Republican, and yes also southern baptist. But he and several of his friends may be voting for Nader in what they are calling a "protest vote." It's actually pretty laughable to me that they hate democrats so much (and without really knowing why anymore....it's like a frickin' sports allegiance or something) that even though they're pissed at Bush they will vote further left than Kerry to avoid voting for a Democrat.

But hey, whatever takes votes away from Dubya.

I actually think Nader will end up taking more of the right's vote than we've anticipated.

You should stop dropping Nader's name to your mom. You know, just ask her what she thinks of him, etc.
